I think the term "UK Hardcore" is really shallow seeing as how Happy Hardcore came from Europe anyways. For a while, I was calling it just plain out Hardcore, be it "Toytown", "Steamtrain", "Get Hype", "Be Happy", etc, because I was getting annoyed at everyone saying that the newer stuff isn't called Happy Hardcore anymore, just Hardcore, and I was told I was wrong by a DJ here in Atlanta, that it wasnt "Hardcore", it was "Happy Hardcore", "Hardcore" is Gabba"...and I just looked at him, so I went back to calling it Happy Hardcore just to get told I was wrong AGAIN for calling the newer stuff Happy Hardcore, so ya, I'm sticking with Happy Hardcore. I think the name fits as its still a lot of the SAME producers from the 90s. Look at Rap music, even its evolved from its original form in the 80s, look at Country music, it's even evolved, but they are still refered to as the same genre name. Sure, the sound has evovled from its original raw sounding, piano-bangin', chipmunky vocals, but it still has its roots and really, how much have we actually changed since 1998? Listen to "Distant Skies" by Unique and listen to a song from today...I think one of the only new sounds is Kurt's electro style. I am not talking about Freeform or Gabba, just today's HHC as compared to 1998/1999.

I don't like it when Australian Hardcore gets Mislabelled as UK Hardcore, it honestly shits me off. I just don't feel that Hardcore should be labelled after it's origin country, even whilst many other countries support and produce the music.

UK Hardcore is NOT an acceptable name in my opinion.

But on topic, no one seems to call it Happy Hardcore anymore, not nearly as much as they used to.. How can something like DJ Kurt's style be called Happy Hardcore? I think that the correct name is Hardcore. Gabber should be called Gabber. Why shouldn't it be called Gabber when it was always originally called Gabber anyway?

i still refer to it as Happy Hardcore because that suits how it sounds imo
to me i can`t call it just Hardcore because its not Hard enough imo to be called just Hardcore

it probably depends on where your from and when you started listening to it

Who actually gives a shit, it's all Hardcore what difference does it make what you call it. This is like that topic about people calling electronic music Techno, again, who honestly gives a crap as long as you know what they are talking about.

Take a listen to "Shimmy" by DJ Kurt, along with "Electron", and tell me those tracks aren't happy-sounding.

QFT.

This is what I was thinking reading all the response's in this thread.

Who cares what someone calls it? If it pisses you off that much, take the time and "correct" the person. Maybe because I barely know anyone that calls any Electronic music in the same field of a genre, and just label everything that is Electronic as 'Techno'; I'm biased.

But, still. Just play the music, if someone asks you what it is, tell them the "correct name" for the genre to you.

I love to call it sad-core :P It's meaningless though, because even the most melancholic hardcore track is filled with that cheesy pseudo-emotional vibe, which is happy either way.

It's always been called Hardcore everywhere outside of the UK, it's only the UK that refers (wrongly) to it as Gabber.
