Well today we see that a sex offender walks free from court and a shoplifter laughs in the face of the cops who arrested him and said to them>>
'You cant lock me up theres no room in prisons' so now were gonna have a lot of people laughing in the face of the law as they think and probably know that there untouchable!
Tony Blair we need more prisons for these crime commiters!
Time to Get John Reid out and bring back the guy with the guide dog! sorry but forgot his name! David ...........

I don't think we need more prisons, I think we need to stop locking up so many people for crimes were prison isn't a very logical punishment. Violent/sexual offenders, robbers and perhaps the most serious drug dealers are the only people I can think of that really need to go to jail, to protect the public more than anything. Locking up prostitutes or people who fiddle their taxes really doesn't make much sense to me.

Theres an extremely simple solution. make the punishment fit the crime. Prisons are cushy, you go in, do a few years, get a TV in your room for good behaviour, some light work to do, perhaps get a degree while your inside. I'm sorry, it just sounds like uni but without the alcohol - where's the deterant?
If you make the punishment fit the crime then that will certainly deter alot of people, such as it does in many arab countries.
If I were Home Secretary:
Murder = death by similar method to your victim(s)
Rape = genitals chopped off. could allow for varying degrees here I guess. first offense = 1 ball, 2nd = 2nd ball and so on
Paedophilia = haven't decided wether it should be straight off with both balls and penis, or death. perhaps something involving a large stick, barbed wire and salt would be appropriate
Theft = lose a hand
fraud = you have to work for free for the rest of your life, or a set period of time. your house is provided by the government and is basically a cardboard box, funded by the profits you make from your work

Should be trying to prevent the crimes from happening in the forst place more imo.
John Reid might have one hell of a shite job on his hands but he was on the ball a lot in his last job I can vouch for that. The home office is in such a state, he'll need time to sort it, but I actually have faith that he will improve it.

Ha Ha! Most of those options sound good to me, even though some are quite extreme.
Personally, I think the best solution is privatising prisons.

Ludicrously extreme much?
I place more stock in the power of forgiveness and engineering a better world to remove the motivations for crimes.
The obsession with retaliation that seems ingrained in society (especially over here in the states) seems like a great way to create a populace with a mentality that it must lash out against the state, and create a state with a mentality that it must lash out at the populace.
If someone is clearly incapable of altering their extremely negative behaviors, we should simply keep them away from those who are innocent. And if what they did was undeniably evil, the ones who already have blood on their hands will take care of them.

well once they have no balls and no penis it limits what they can do. If they use their hands, chop them off. Child pornography = cut out their eyes. My country would be well wicked!! I'd probably change the name to Underland or something too!

My thoughts on paedophiles would be to hang them as they have already killed of their victims who have had to live with what has been inflicted on them!
Sick scum of the earth or better still put them in a room with the victims family for an hour!
People are so sick in the head!
Child molesters, child beaters, elder abusers, rapists, people who hurt defenceless animals too!
Oh i could go on all day!
We live in a world of evil!

I agree! Why lock up someone who although has broken the law, hasn't really cause much worry to the public? Sure people messing texes should be punished, but paying off their fines sounds more sensible rather than taking up tax payers money in prison! I we could do with more prison spaces, but reserve them for those who need to be put there, not those that could be better suited elsewere...

I feel (much like Ghandi) that forgiveness is necessary to end the cycle of destruction that is present in society.

How can you forgive someone who does things against your will?
Who inflicts pain on defenceless people or who take it upon themselves to degrade others in the most inhumane way?

Very true indeed, the only people who should be put in prison are those who are a danger to society. That doesn't mean that those not fit for jail 'get away' with what they have done, but since putting them in prison would make absolutely no difference to anyone else they can afford not to because it is for the greater good if the space is spent on people who actually need to be kept away from the rest of society. It's just about priorities.
