the birth place is UK for sure but don't know where about, probably some where up north like leeds.

and as for genre splits, it went somthing like this

UK / 1988 Acid House scene

UK / 1991/2 Things got faster, harder, darker, 'Hardcore' was born

UK / 1993 Jungle was at its peak (it was the prototype of Drum'n'bass if you like)

Holland / 1993 Gabber was big (I think)

UK / 1995 - The "Split" Jungle got a name change to 'Drum'n'bass' and Hardcore evolved into "Happyhardcore" with the help of gabber influence!

UK / 1996 Happyhardcore was at its peak! (then died around 1998 - for good, some say)

after that, it got silly and there was a new Genres and Genre names every month!!

I think UK garage is crap IMO

I would say netherlands, although germany has always been a pioneer in electronic music. and dutch/german labels spread it all over europe...
Thats my theory...

Yes, too right. You can say the uk but you can't really narrow it down to a particular town or city.

As for the Netherlands...pffft, dont think so.

Netherlands are responsible for the harder gabba type sound, which was created for that particular market over there in Europe where the crowd don't have the same sort of love affair with breakdowns as we do over here in the UK... it could also be argued that Germany had a hand in that too.

The happy hardcore sound, however, definitely came from the UK back in the early nineties

A lot did happen in Mansfield (near where I live too) but it wasn't exactly where it started. It was where vibealite in its original form started though. They were the days ....

During the Acid House days (which was a UK thang) People like Sy, Dougal, Slipmatt , stu Allen and Carl Cox emerged on the rave scene, these were the God fathers of what was to become Old Skool, known then as HARDCORE.
Other people like Dave Pierce went on with the House vibe. However live PA's had a lot to do with the birth of the scene and Prodigy plus Altern8 (from Stafford by the way) really kicked off the whole raving thing.
In relation to 'Happy Hardcore' That was primarily Sy, Dougal, Hixxy, Seduction,Sharkey, Brisk who created the revival; As many of the other Djs like Ellis Dee, Grooverider, Easygroove, Carl Cox and Dj SS moved off into the Jungle side of things. note Carl Cox is now playing Housey techno but then he always was a bit of a musical sl*t (no offense, I love him but a purist he ain't) .
Now I grant that Gabba and Techno from the contient played a part in the sound of Happy Hardcore but its birth place is in the UK, not Germany, Holland or Spain. When i think 'Happy Hardcore' I think Techno beat, Piano's, Lyrics (optional) , breakbeats, Mc's, Crazy Toytown melody. In this respect only the Uk includes all of those elements.
So the Uk is the country, now as to towns....hmmm.....without generalizing to much, Basically it grew and thrived in working class estates and poorer areas.
I know cos I am from one. New towns such as Milton Kenyes, Redditch, Telford, Cwmbran and Basingstoke really grabbed hold of it, I am from Redditch and i think this reason was down to these towns having one maybe two meat slab clubs and no soul. Everything even the trees and parks feel man made, Hardcore kind of embraces but also confronts that. No don't get me wrong, other places like Leciester,Stafford,Stoke,Manchester,London,Brum,Edinburgh and West Wales were also vital also with huge follwings along with Bristol and South Wales.
So to finish, it is a UK working class sound that can legitamately claim like Jungle, Rap and garage to have come from the Suburban streets.

i thought oldskool started in around 1987 with the rat pack the 1st dj & mc team on the whole of the scene ????? and happyhard started in 93 not 95 , stuff like "broken wings", n finneshed making happyhard in bout 99 but it has not died , its just gone very very underground, n people out of the rave scene dont know wat happyhard is they think its just shooting star n children of the night, bolloxs. check out vibes n livelee show, alot of those ecstacy tunes are top class.

In general trev, I would agree with you, Yes Ratpack were around as well, but the rave sound was still really on the fringes and just breaking thru,
It was still recognised as Acid House, but like now certain ppl were playing a harder sound like Ratpack, SY etc etc. Although most would say Happy hardcore 93-96 it was more like end of 93 till early-ish 97,
These were my Uni years, and i remember not getting a degree in Drama but Happy hardcore at a night called Oxygen where we had Sharkey, Hixxy, Brisk, Billy Bunter, Robbie Dee, Dougal and Easygroove played. Trouble with old skool, it can mean anything from (like you said) 87 till around the end of 92/93. In general I split it into three genres

ACCCCCIIIDDD!!! = Acid House 8-)

Fantazia First Taste = Rave music

First Breakbeats and Jungle, Carl cox, Jumpin Jack Frost,Jodie,Dj Rap,Slipmatt, Dj SS, Grooverider,Fabio, Ellis Dee, Simon 'Bassline' and Donavan 'Bad Boy' Smith , Stu Allan, SY,
and Ratpack Heyday = Old Skool (As all of them were considered Hardcore)

That's my deffination anyhow hope I am clearer. Not everyone may agree with me but at least now I have explained myself properly 8-)

This would be an easier question to answer if you could decide what tune was the first happy hardcore tune. The question was happy hardcore, so that puts the year at about 93/94. The term happy hardcore indicates 4 beat to me, sooo... maybe something like Samplemania or Bust A New Jam. I dunno...

Pretty sure it must have something to do with Sedders. He started early hardcore, so probably pioneered Happy too. In which case, as Sedders is, I think, from London, it must have started in London!

Saying that, he's probably from Timbuktu for all I know...

In relation to the first tune,
Although it is termed old skool, I would say 'Trip to trumpton' contained all the key elements: Brakbeat, Piano, Vocals, fairground feel, Break down in the middle. Silver mentioned it in a previous forum and I would say its known as old skool but that is because it exisited before the title
