Like I say, just a thought - total hypothetical.

For those of you that are familiar with my website, Hardcore Highlights, do you think it would be a remotely good/ridiculous idea to consider setting up a free net label off the back of it, to promote up and coming producers?

I know the Hardcore scene/market is saturated with digi labels at the moment, but my website is gradually getting a bit more popular (i.e., with the main focus pushing free tracks) and I get a lot of supportive and appreciative e-mails from up and coming producers for featuring their tracks.

A logical step might be to think about setting up a free label to help promote the countless (if they're good enough) unsigned producers out there.

What do people think? Stupid idea? Been done before? Not bother? Waste of time?

sounds like a nice idea! - i think a better idea would be having direct linking on the site to the mp3, instead of it just linking off to another website to download the tracks

back on the label thing, there arent as many freebie labels as their are people trying to make a quick buck - so its a nice area to get into.

Ahh mate, trust me, I know. Every time I upload a new track, that's all I think about. "Ahh, people are gonna be pissed it's not a direct link". But, I'm travelling at the moment, and I don't really have the spare cash to pay for my own dedicated server. I'm just using a shitty WordPress template and linking it to that BeatPlexity site (which my mate owns).

When I'm home (and I may even take the plunge and do it beforehand) I'll definitely improve things with the site, and getting/buying a server to allow for direct downloads is my first priority. Second priority is to install a working database, instead of just static pages with lists of tracks.

But I'm doing the best I can with the resources I've got at the moment.

Edit, just seen your edit. That's what I thought, there aren't reeeeally that many free labels around at the moment. Project 00 (infrequent, yet quality) and RuffBeatz are the main ones that spring to mind. I'm just worried about, if it were to ever happen, setting it up and it just being a joke really. I'd need to get someone on board with engineering/producing knowledge for a start.

to be honest, lesser known artist should use this way to promote their stuff, instead of throuing it out on IMOdownload and hope a sucker (like me :P) will buy them

That thought had crossed my mind as well. I thought about how many label descriptions I've read in the last year: "A.P.L. (Another Pointless Label) are a brand new label dedicated to bringing you the best music from up and coming artists from across the UK Hardcore scene".

Jesus, powerful labels like Next Generation and the likes, are struggling to sell, let alone brand new labels for up and comers no one's heard of.

So, maybe a free label would be more popular, providing the music was of high quality (very important to me).

Personally I think it's a great idea, especially for people like me.
I'm not a guy wanting to make any money at all out of what I do, all I want is for people to appreciate the music and enjoy it. This makes me feel like I've got something out of making the music and it feels like an achievement. Money doesn't matter to me.

So yeah, it would be a great idea I think, what have you got to lose?

Thanks for the support mate, but I dunno if you read this bit: "providing the music was of high quality (very important to me). "

Thanks Elliot. Much appreciated mate. And refreshing to hear someone to sincerely say that they're all about the music and not the money. Not that everyone else is like that, and not that age and experience wouldn't change someones out look, but still - it's good that there are people like you in the scene.

And agreed - nothing to really lose. I'm going to fire off a few e-mails to label owners and get their advice. I'm looking at Gaz (Audio Weaponry) and Craig (NSR) to share their thoughts in this thread if they happen to catch it. Got a lot of respect for you two, and it'd be great to hear your thoughts, however punishing they might be.

Ha ha. Mate, you know I'd be looking at you for help with this. I like a hell of a lot of your tracks, and the reception to them has been great through my site and YouTube channel. I would love, again - getting so ahead of myself - release your Poppiholla remix. Maybe you could re-look at it and give it a harder kick. As much as I love it, it does sound a bit soft. You know I love you, don't be offended.

and what styles would you accept?

I'd prefer if people who wish to contribute would also contribute more varied tastes, instead of uploading 10 tracks that a sounds the same. I presume you wish to help the arist, and not just give them a place to share their (crappy) stuff for free

Firstly big ups to X-ell. Had a chat with him the other day. The lad knows what its all about, and hes getting some ruddy good music out there too.

You've helped me allot to promote my stuff, mate. Would be happy to look at Floppybother for you!

It's a nice idea and I think you should go for it. It will help promote producers as well as push more people to your website. Samus is right though, more variety not all the same style from the same artist is a must.

Sounds like a wicked idea to me mate! I've always thought about setting up something proper to put my free tracks out on but just haven't ever got round to doing it. I'd be happy to help out as well if you want.

I think a lot of people who do buys tracks on TID, IMO etc. don't even use forums etc. so the real worry is how do you let these people know about the label I suppose. Need a lot of pimping on facebook, get people to spread it about and some fliers and/or maybe CD's with a web address etc. handed out at parties could be a good idea to get things going.

adding a "rate or hate" option would be nice.

If you need a DB (mysql5), I might got something working

I'd try and make it as varied as possible, but the primary focus would be the quality of the music. I wouldn't choose a Gabba track for a release over a better produced UK Hardcore track just for the sake of variation. But yes, variation would be important.

Agreed. There's a lot of that around at the moment, and I'd be keen to avoid doing it.

Cheers Gaz, and if it were to ever materialise I would definitely take you up on that offer to help. And squeeze some tracks out of you as well!

Yeah, that is an issue I've been thinking about, and there's no real magic answer. Like you say, facebook rape and fliers. The flip-side, though, is that it'd be a free label and everyone involved with it would be so knowing that there's no money going to anyone - so it's not like there would be financial pressures. That said, no one's going to want to be involved with it if each release is only getting 19 downloads. So yeah, thinking/work to be done there.

Interesting. I may well take you up on that. I've got a load of friends from my old job who are database developers as well, so hopefully between you and them (since I know next to nothing) I can get something sorted.
