A very good idea and a very noble one.
Something to think about though.....Like someone has already mentioned, if you are doing a freebie label to push up coming artists, then thats all very good, but what else will you do to help push them?
My point is, why would producer A give his track for your freebie label if he could stick it on his own soundcloud page and let people download it for free and spam the forums himself?
You have to do something extra as a label that makes it worthwhile a producer giving you their music, otherwise they may aswell give it away for free on their own. So thats maybe something to think about.
Off the top of my head, ideas that could entice producers to be associated with you....
- Handing out CDs of unmixed tracks from your label at raves, with the web address on etc (already mentioned)
- Sending the tracks to main stage DJs a month or two before giving them away for free (you only need 1 guy like Brisk, Kutski, Re-Con etc to like the track and mention your site on their facebook to gain a fair amount of hits and interest). Plus sending those guys regular promos may even get you some good contacts for the future.
- Putting together downloadable albums with proper artwork etc (either pay good DJs to mix it and try and be the next CoH (you would lose money but having DJs similar to what CoH used mixing your tracks would gain you alot of traffic and respect....how often do people like Cube::hard and Entity giveaway DJ mixes? Gotta make it rare, thats the beauty of CoH) or do it like the PPF album on here was done).
- Put on your own events associated to the labels name and book maybe 5 DJs who are contributing free music to your label (ask them to play for free, as your a free label and its free promotion for them, name on a flyer, DJ experience etc) and book 1 DJ who is at a higher level who you would pay. This way your artists can meet that DJ and maybe gain a contact, aswell as meet eachother and meet the ravers. Charge a small fee on the door to cover the room cost and the paid DJ.
- Remixes. Use your contacts to get artists to remix eachothers work. For example, get producer A on your label, to remix producer B's track. That way, that track should appeal to both A and B's fanbases and maybe get themselves a few new fans.
Just because its a free label, doesnt mean its less work. If you genuinely want to push artists names out there then its a damn hard slog, wether their music is free or paid for. Yeah a free track may get 500 downloads and a paid track 50. But how many people will delete the free track a week or two later or just forget about it? If you pay for a track you play it alot to makesure you get your moneys worth. Alot of people will just download anything thats free and never even use it. So its quality over quantity :)
As I say though, for a free label, the time and effort and the new ideas still all need to be there, otherwise the artist gains nothing. Its no point just hosting their track, you need to do more for them if you really want it to work :)
Man that was a long post lol. Hope it helps a tad.

Very valuable input mate, thank you for taking the time to write all that out. It's appreciated, and I'll be reading it several times.

I'm still totally undecided mate. If I do go through with it, I'll be sure to let everyone know and I'll, of course, be glad to look at the track. :-)

I think it's an awesome idea and one I wish you the best of luck with if you decide to go ahead. I do think though you will probably need direct downloads at least for the tracks on your label if you do go forward.

Ha ha, of course I would arrange for that, as a minimum. Here's what I said earlier on in the thread:
"Ahh mate, trust me, I know. Every time I upload a new track, that's all I think about. "Ahh, people are gonna be pissed it's not a direct link". But, I'm travelling at the moment, and I don't really have the spare cash to pay for my own dedicated server. I'm just using a shitty WordPress template and linking it to that BeatPlexity site (which my mate owns).
When I'm home (and I may even take the plunge and do it beforehand) I'll definitely improve things with the site, and getting/buying a server to allow for direct downloads is my first priority. Second priority is to install a working database, instead of just static pages with lists of tracks.
But I'm doing the best I can with the resources I've got at the moment."
That said, I did try to sort out a shared server the other day, but one of the security requirements during the ordering process was that an automated call would be placed to my phone, where a pin code would be read out. Obviously, I don't have a phone and can't receive the call. I tried e-mailing them to explain it, but every e-mail address of theirs bounced. Fcuk knows why. Properly pissed me off. I'll look for another provider.

I'm with Kualo: http://www.kualo.co.uk/webhosting/ Fantastic host. Never had any problems with them since signing up. The only issue I had was during sign up (I didn't set the right plan that I wanted). They where so fast to sort it out, we're talking about 30 minutes and they are really nice people to deal with. They are now doing cheap cloud servers too.
