Two new vinyls arrived today. One from 1995 & the other from 2005. You would think I would love the 95 one wouldn't you? No. I downloaded this mixes ages ago with a sexy breakbeat vocal tune in it yet they put the wrong nae of the tune in the tracklist so I was left with a rather dull tune

The 2005 tune was none other than DJ Ruffage & Size - Been On A Star / Remembering A Fractured Utopia. RFU Recordingz, RFU004.

The Been on a star tune seems to be a remake of Wonderland- Been on a star (1996) which I have also ordered. This tune is what Hardcore SHOULD have sounded like in 2005. It is modern, nothing 'Old Skool' about it. It has hard kicks. Thats what each Hardcore tune should have (unless it is a full breakbeat tune). It is an amazing tune!

But there is one thing, how many people remember it being slamed across the raves of 2005? No many I don't think, there is a reason for this... THE MAINSTREAM!

I can't remember hearing this on any compilations that year. All I remeber hearing was shitty raverbaby/Clubland tunes that arn't even Hardcore. This tune is real Hardcore. Hard kicks, a few breaks. It is a good tune yet because the mainstream refuse any decent types of Hardcore the rave scene is now full of boring remixes of shit pop tunes! [:-(]

Thats what I wrot on Facebook to which I added, and before anyone asks im not sending an mp3 over msn to anyone. Support the scene by buying real Hardcore and **** all that Raverbaby, Clubland & HTIT ********. Darren Styles & MC Strom cvan't both go and **** themseleves. Hixxy, you havn't made a good tune since 1996 so **** off as well. That goes for you too, Dougal!

Thanks to the terrible clubland style & the mainstream artists refusing to play tunes other than their own weak tunes then good tunes like this never get heard, they never get played and they never get big! Other people get used to the raverbaby style, so copy it, leading to a demense in real Hardcore. People who try to make good tunes get ignored of if they dare use a few breaks or hard kicks it is 'Old Skool' and 'dated' or 'the scene has changed and no one makes tunes like that any more'

So as a result we are now left with a bunch of dated tunes and everyone is getting bored. It seems that the raverbaby style is sounding as dated as the Old Skool style so the way I see it is if we are all going to make Old Skool, at least make it good Old Skool!

As for the tune itself, it isn't on youtube (it is underplayed as no one was aloud to listen to it unless it tistracted good ravers from Clubland Hardcore & resulted in a loss in sales from Raverbaby, AATW, Quosh, New Essential Platinum & what ever else)

I heard it on this site as Silver had it for sale once & Silver seems to like all types of Hardcore. I brought it off discogs & even though it is from 2005 (a terrible year for Hardcore thanks to Clubland taking over) it is as good as all my 1995 classics! If only this was the sound of 2005 instead of Clubland & maybe they will still be making good Hardcore now!

Aww.

Thing is, back then the most we could do was commision and sign material that we liked and hurl it out blindly at an audience with their backs turned. You will be unsuprised to hear that RFU004 wasn't our biggest seller

Now, however, things are slightly different. We can feature tracks on albums, reach a larger audience on vinyl, and command at least a modicum of interest from DJs established through baby faced.

This is why in my eyes 2009 is better than 2005. It's a shame it's taken 4 years.

Can we have more tracks like Be on a Star this year? I am on the RFU Recordings website & disopointed with the other realeases including some horrible Styles & Breeze remixes Im very strict when it comes to Hardcore so I think it is a shame a tune as good as Been on a Star dosn't get popular while shit does

Can people please stop whining about the "mainstream"? Its mainstream because its has broader mass-appeal.

My mom likes Darren styles. His music is amazing, even though I prefer the stuff I'd find on an HU compilation. I prefer complex music but the simpler stuff is what attracts the masses and its pretty essential in a scene like this.

Just because something is popular doesn't mean its inherently bad.

Been on a star is a good track, and I used to play it out at raves back then. That scooter sample...lol. Nonetheless, its ridiculous how much people on here whine about things that are popular.

Every scene seems to be like this. The punk scene bands that get signed to "real" labels are suddenly "commercial" and therefore bad.

Hardcore wasn't like that ruffage track in 2005 because that's not what ravers wanted to hear. As much as I love broken beats, its something you need a bit of time to appreciate.

Your best bet in an immediate sense is to grab some of the freebies from there. Start w/ "My Love" by Chwhynny, it's a Dune tribute so it might appeal

Or you could wait for the HU site to relaunch imminently which has the same freebies + some new ones.

Whilst not entirely similar to RFU004A, check out RFU010A and RFU013A

For the moment, RFU Recordingz is defunct and focus is on Hardcore Underground.

I think you will find that ALOT of Ravers would have wanted to hear that track. It is just the 'mainstream' don't play it so ravers don't hear it. So then the mainstream think that ravers only want to hear their stuff. Had that tune made it on Bonkers it would have been massive so ravers would want to hear more, artists would follow that lead ect.

All the early RFU releases hold pride of place in what's left of my record collection - bit daft seeing as i don't own decks anymore!

I played Been on a star out a few times and it always went down well. Surprised you said it wasn't at all 'Old skool' sounding though cos that was what appealed to me most about it - brought back memories of random old cheese but with a modern edge!

I'm actually buying this track (on digital off serioussounds) when I get paid next week. I May be four years late, but it's a nice tune. Oh, and smoogie, a diary is something that, usually girls, write down all their feelings and fantasies in. The guy version is called a journal.

Smoogie...I hate to say this, and I know you're going to disagree to this, but you're going to listen the feeling off those old tracks the more and more you limit yourself to them. You'll eventually get to a point to where you still like the tracks, but they just won't appeal to you as they do now. When I got Bonkers 14, I hammered "I Know" by Vibes & Hattrixx, and now when I play it, I just feel like "eh...". I think you should focus on the actual tracks being made today instead of who's making them. Hardcore Underground vol.3 had many great tracks, along with Bonkers, Clubland X-Treme Hardcore 4, & 5, Hardcore Nation 2009, etc. Now, before you say anything, I love the old skool sound just as much as you do, but I still look for new and exciting tracks.
