Is it illegal to buy a CD, rip the songs to mp3, and at a later date give away or sell the CD but keep the mp3s? My guess would be that it is.
Does anyone know for sure?

Yeah, just realized, if it was legal then you could just borrow CDs and rip them.
So, if I want to keep my MP3s I got to keep the CD. Okay, just checking.

I did that not too long ago.
Dont see the difference between Selling the CDs and selling the CDs and keeping MP3s of them...It's not disadvantaging anyone when you think about it.

Exactly what I was thinking, you've already payed.
Also, if you have ripped songs from a CD, then the CD breaks do you by law have to delete the MP3s?

I agree with RavingJNooney and B.C. isn't keeping mp3's on your pc just like a form of backup...? I don't agree to selling the cd afterwords but if it broke then why not.

Well, everyone could just buy a CD, rip it onto the computer then take it back to the shop saying "your mum has alreasdy bought it you for your birthday" or something. But that would be sad and damn tight.
To answer the original question technically its illegal but unless the police come round, look at your mp3s and ask for the original source (which you could just say legal download anyway) then you'll hardly be most wanted

Cheers for your conclusion.

It may not disadvantage people, but it is the law. With CDs (and music in general) you are (and someone please correct me if I am wrong on this point) actually paying in effect for a licence for personal use of the music contained on the CD/record/vinyl/mp3. By selling the CD you are selling the licence hence if I am right you can legally keep the mp3s as long as you don't play them. The licence is for PERSONAL use though, and doesn't grant you the rights to play the recordings publicly etc etc
Please note I am not a lawyer, and neither do I play one in an American soap opera.

the law is different depending where you live.
In sweden, we are abit soft about when it comes to making 'backups'. but it's still illegal to use said backups by selling, or sharing them online.
the swedish version of RIAA are ofcourse pissed off, cause they cant stop us 'pirates' ;)

I know its the law but the law doesnt always make sense. I still cant see how its harming anyone...what does it matter to anyone if I listen to a song without having the CD at that time? Dont get me wrong, I'm against filesharing (on the larger scale - not for just tasting hardcore) but I cant see how getting a quid back for a CD you bought 5 years prior is doing anyone any harm.

Doesn't have to be hurting anybody to make it wrong.
If you still wanted the tracks, why sell the CD?

Didn't fancy the clutter of 4 CD racks in my living room so put everything through my computer and got rid of my CDs. There were a few rarities that would be silly to throw out so I sold them on (about 30-40 in all) and I gave the other 150 or so away to close mates.
Still failing to see how it is wrong......
