My vinyl are ordered by label and cat. #
so lets say (using random #'s):
evo 8
evo 12
evo 15
e+ 3
e+ 5
e+ 8
e+ 9
NG 27
NG 32
NG 33
NG 45
RB 15
RB 16
If you keep it in this order and get your feel for it enough, you will be able to pick out a record blind.

Don't have vinyl but I'm pretty thorough with my MP3 management. e.g.
Dance>
..........Hardcore>
........................Hardcore Nation 2>
...................................................Track1

My Vinyls are ordered by Label/CAT
my mp3 are abit more complicated, they're sorted by Vinyl(/CD/Digital)/Label/CAT :P (yes, that means I ripp my vinyls and CD's, how did you think i made my mixes if Im a PCDJ?). This means, since all the stores label they're track totally different, that I orginaze my files hellova lot.
Digital/Relentless Digital/RLNTDIGI001/01 - Duncan Oathman - Are You Sure.mp3
(an example)

i should explain first that my music library is quite extensive, over 2500 files, as i like to copy my cd's incase i break or lose them. i only copy albums into wma format and download single tracks legaly into mp3 format.
anyway , this is how i sort my library out...
albums like this...
artist folder > album name folder > 01 - artist name - song name.wma
or if they are single (legal) mp3's
artist folder > artist name - song name.mp3
i also put my cds in alphabetical order
i spend 6 hours last saturday revising my music library cause it was messed up big time, there better be no bloody mistakes cause if there are...

I keep my Old and new Hardcore separate, with vinyl Alphabetically and by label.
BUT
Everything i bought in the last few months is right at the front of my box.
My CD's are in random piles around the house!
My PC is a mess!

/Genre
artist - song name (remix).mp3
tagged..
album, track#, genre, artist, song name (remix)
cd's get ripped to /genre/album/track# - artist - song name (remix).mp3
then tagged and renamed with mp3tag-tools then moved to the genre folders.
winamp media library, and a few custom querys sorts everything else out
i dont own any vinyl.

Style of music (hardcore, happy, old skool, trance, dance etc)
Then by cat num within that.
Similarly to DMS, I have my "record box" which is all the stuff I'm playing at that time to hand

Style (freeform, bouncy, trancy)
Label
Cat no.
I have 3 boxes/bags of records, 1 Freeofrm, 1 Happy/bouncy (Next gen/evo/quosh) and 1 Trancy (raverbaby + others such as Neuklez/Definitive dance). I'm pretty anal about my system. I could pretty well pick out the records blindfolded

Do mine by genre, label & cat number. I usually have a couple of months worth lying round because I can't be arsed to file it :P.

Don't have MP3's, but my vinyl is arranged in style order. I tried lables ect, but they get messed up to quickly.
