Thats probably the closest i went, i went to a vocational school (dont they have those in UK?). Though apprenticeship as it would mean here, i would have got payed while i study, witch i didnt. As i got my eduation in a school.

An apprenticeship over here is a mixture of study and on-the-job training - which you get paid for yes, but you do have to work as well.

Vocational school is like Technical college I guess.... although you can do vocational courses (NVQ stands for National Vocational Qualification I think) in most colleges. What did you do Mr Whispering?

I'm a bit drunk so bare with me...
First I went to primary school (that you have to go to by law).
After that (about the age 15-16) you can go to upper secondary school ("high school"), vocational school or to that apprenticeship (very rare) witch is much like vocational school only you get your education in company (witch pays you, and gets money from government for educating you).

In highschool (last 3 years) you just get basic all-round education, and from there you go to university or to <my dictionary doesnt have translation to it but i think it is "vocationally oriented higher education" -> Polytechnics, its called AMK here so i will refer to that from now on> school :p

In vocational school (lasts about 3 years, but varies by profession) (witch i went, i'm a Architectural Technician ...according to my business card) you go to the school to basicly study to a profession. After that you go to work, or get a higher education in that AMK (witch english name i didnt know). I went to work :)

In apprenticeship you much like in vocational school study into a profession, but usually the company where you study assumes you will stay there working after "graduation".

So i have only gone to vocational school after primary school, if you want to know what that is, then go there ->

Sorry Slasher, I've tried to answer your question about what college is, but kind of missed out on your other questions.

College generally lasts 1 - 2 academic years (the academic year runs September to July (ish??) here in the UK. If he came over a few weeks ago that would be the start of the Summer hols, and back in a month would be the start of next term - perhaps he came over for a "Summer School" style course like you suggested?

College names.... well to be honest, its not like University where there is only one in every major city. There are literally thousands of them, and trying to name a few would be pointless as there aren't really any *famous* colleges in the UK. Well there are, but they are University Colleges which are a totally different thing - confused? You should try fighting your way through the UK education system LOL

for colleges, universities and such, rather for the top schools in the u.k., approximately what sort of average/grade point average are they looking for?
and what other things do they look for? i know different schools require different things, but generally speaking. because for example, here in the u.s. colleges like to see lots of volunteer hours/community service...

Well it depends if you understand our grading system

A* is basically the best and U is the worst (ungraded)
and it goes from A* - G i think

For most collages you need 5 A*'- C's to get in and sometimes course requirements,

As im taking at i need at least a C in Art and for Theatre Studies i need at least a C in English Literature.

But if you don't achive the required grades there are lower courses, or they see if your capable enough to enter the high course.

Not really you have an interview with the head of the course, but thats just so they can have a chat with you and make sure your choosing the right options.

I hope that makes some sense Squishy!

it depends on the course your taking, quite a lot of courses only require you to turn up and want to do the course

most AS/A level courses require 32 points. which is around 7 C grades, slightly less i think, 6 C's and an F or something. Thats just AS/A levels tho NVQ's etc all have different requirements and like you say some of them only need you to want to do the subject. I cant really help you with your questions about your friends courses because i dont know any course that would start in July. But like ppl have mentioned the normal college year runs from september through to late june/early july with breaks at christmas, easter and summer and a week halfway through each term

kewl thanks for all the replies. one question tho, when pupils go to college, do they stay there for whole school year, or they come visit their families during school from time to time?
