nagasaki was devasted, 60,000 people vapourised in an instant

do you believe the slaughter of hundreds of thousands was just or was it a rash decision?

I think it was a very rash decision and more than likely the excuse they had been waiting for to try out some new technology in a real situation, a real disaster IMO.

Rash decision is an understatement, there is never an excuse for mass murder.

not trying to justify it but isn't that what japan did at pearl harbour....

and technically the soldiers killed at pearl harbour were civilians as they weren't in the war and japan hadn't declared war on them

and seeing as it won't let me edit i'll double post, didn't they use bubonic plague on the chinese and kill 300,000 civilians

personally i think it was needed sparing the lives of hundreds of thousnads of more soldiers but also as a test for thse weapons they had created

I watched a program on this last night and it was Hiroshima not Nagasaki today. Nagasaki is about 6 days later and had a lot less casualties than Hiroshima.

I don't know the full story of Pearl Harbour but found the story of Hiroshima very harrowing, especially as a mother, the part where another mother had to listen to her own child being burnt to death. I was crying my eyes out.

I do have my opinions on this but will keep them to myself as there are Americans on this forum who will have their own opinions which I may not agree with.

I'll just say that I find mass destruction and death unexplicable in any country whether you may think it is justified or not. You may think it was revenge for Pearl Harbour but I think that makes the Americans as bad as the Japanese!

Just to clear it up....

Japan had officially declared war but due to various oversites and delays, mainly by the Americans,
the declaration reached the correct people later than the Japanese intended.

It was not sneaky, underhand and unethical as the US Government lead us to believe.

There have been many books and films that attest to the truth of this.

However. Throw enough mud and it sticks.

....it certainly does not justify the Atom Bomb on Hiroshima.

....and definately does not justify the second bomb on Nagasaki.

militarily sure it wasn't the greatest thing to use on them, but something like that I feel needed to be done due to the mindset of most japanese being fight until the death...and it was more honorable for them to kill themselves than to be taken captive.

second, the atomic bomb was mainly made from ideas from foriegners who fled to america for protection from the axis powers, mainly germany. so don't just point the finger squarely at america just because it was an american plane that dropped them.

as cruel as the japanese soldiers were to china, I feel something like that was necessary...however I feel the targets should of been different ones.

it's interesting how much of a hatred for the japanese many elderly people have here, and how much prejudice has changed over time.

While I don't support mass murder, it did end up stopping the war.

Nevertheless, the devastation was incredible, and.... for lack of a better word, devastating.

I really feel sorry for all the victims and the familes of those victims. Such devastation shouldn't be wished on anyone. At all. Ever.

At the end of the day we are still all human despite our political beliefs, our skin colour, our gender and our sexual preference (the list could go on).

To treat any other human less than that, is one of the most horrifying things I know. Even films that show racism shock me. I don't dare to watch Romper-Stomper.

But I digress, my deepest condolences to the victims.

And a big 'up yours' to the coporations that support, finance and develop weapons technology. I fail to see how better weapons that kill more people quicker encourage peace.

" genetic damage" by scienciests

What pisses me off is americans end role, esp since they knew fall well that Japans troops slaughted over 1000 australian troops in camps a few days before the they declared there surrender.
the world wanted the emporer to go on trail for many war crimes, but yet america said no because they made a ecconomical agreement ($$$$)

..stupid opera cut off the end of my post

any life lost is precious and it must have been devastating to be vaporized, but you have to ask if by dropping the bomb more lives were saved. We will never know for sure, but it wouldve been likely that more lives would have been lost on both sides had the Americans decided to fight a land war because (as Brian K mentioned) of the Japanese mentality of "fight to the death". I think dropping it on a military/industrial area would have been more justifiable however.

But if you want to slag Americans, you have to take into account what the Japanese had done to the Chinese, or what the Germans did to everyone that wasnt German, or what the Russians did to Berlin, or what the British did to German cities, or what... the list goes on for a long time. Everyone gets their hand's dirty in war.

Im not trying to justify what happened in any way, just take a bright view. What happened in that eara was a big learning curve for most of the Western world, and much of the East, i dont think the Americans quite knew the full extent of what they were doing or the consiquences.

We have learnt alot from it all, we have developed so many technology's from ideas thought in war, the world for the most part now understands the harsh consiquences of war, we seem to becoming in some ways more just, using words to fight.

Although we seem to have got ourselvs into a fine mess in Iraq.

Does anyone know if the earth/land in Hiroshima is still suffering from radiation pollution because of the bombing 60 years ago??
