OK, after a bit of googling and some throwing about of equations, I have derived the following equation relating distance, speed and calories (it relies on the fact that calories burnt against velocity remains constant at high velocities, which if these speeds were possible I doubt it would be linear)
E = 60*d*(1.0875 +0.7/v)
Where E is the energy burnt in calories
d is the distance travelled in km
v is the velocity in km/h
Working on the speed limit on a motorway (70mph = 112.7 km/h) and the distance from reading to london being 60.67 km (looked up on the net) then the total calories burnt for this journey would be 3981.3 kCal!!!

Would it help if I mentioned that I have 2 months of research left before I start writing up my PhD and this time next year I'l be Dr. Under(smart arse)loop :-P
Oh, the accuracy isn't spot in in the above equation as it relied on fitting some data which I googled across and the fitting equation isn't 100% spot on..... but it gives you a good idea lol

sorry, * is the same as multiply - usually used when typing as its easy to get confused with the letter x which is used as a variable sometimes
I derived the equation from several sources.
I can't find the data I fitted, but basically it was a linear relationship (that is a straight line when plotted against each other) of running speed against calories burnt per minute, and gave:
cal/min = 1.0875v + 0.7 (where 1.0875 and 0.7 are simply constants and v is velocity - this equation is based on the equation of a line which is y=mx+c which you may know from GCSE maths?)
velocity, v is distance divided by time (v = 60d/t) (the 60 is to convert minutes into hours so all the time units are in hours) or rearranging it t=60d/v
so the left handside of the first equation is the same as Ev/60d (where E is energy in calories).
Substituting the 2 together we get
Ev/60d = 1.0875v + 0.7
and rearanging
E = 60d(1.0875v + 0.7)/v

i really want to get into the Medical Field, would love to be a surgeon or something but what's giving me second thoughts of having to go to school for years and years is...the lack of time i'll have to enjoy myself and going to raves. haha but i guess it's definitely possible to be a "closet geek" and still have just as much fun as those who don't have a desire to achieve higher...
(harsh!) but that's not my point.
and yea...the equation, y=mx+c, looks really familiar... >.<
y=ax^2+bx+c ...^^ looks like something that'd have to do with lines and slopes...

Heh, sorry I'm not a medical doctor..... studying for a PhD in Mechanical Engineering. Specialising in dynamics and vibration at the moment. Although students have to work hard, we do also play just as hard! Stick with what your heart tells you

heh, errmm yeah *blush* I should've said speed I guess as you can't travel reading to london on foot as the crow flies, or maybe even modulus of displacement. I was good though and used SI units
Squishy: Sorry, so used to people assuming when i say Dr that I can cure their life threatening illnesses.... they get worried when I take a torque wrench out.
Dynamics and vibration.... basically studying how things behave when they're being shaken. Natural frequencies and all that. The main thing I am looking at right now is how aircraft panels react to extremly high levels of noise such as that produced by fighter jet engines placed right next to it. By high levels we're talking up to about 185dB (for examples of sound levels check the table halfway down at http://www.nonoise.org/quietnet/sienc/soundlev.htm).
