Hixxy had a big discussion about this in on his latest Rinse FM show. He seemed to be supportive of slower Hardcore productions and just freedom of speed in Hardcore.
But to me when I hear all that 92 stuff he plays, it doesn't even sound like Hardcore. Is about the speed of House Music.
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON SO MANY HARDCORE DJS GOING SLOWER? I am not a fan.
Vibes - plays & produces slower 92 style
Slipmatt - plays slower 92 style
Seduction - producing slower 92 style
Billy Bunter - plays 92 style on podcast
Darren Styles - Slower 160bpm
Dougal - slowed his productions to 160 with Minus the crown
Joey Riot - Also slowed his productions down to 160 with Minus the crown.
Hixxy - playing constant slower 160 tracks on his podcast
Mob now Mike Reverie - slower 160
Respect to the guys who are not doing a DARREN STYLES and watering down their sound.

In terms of Hardcore, as in Happy Hardcore / UK Hardcore, it should never be that slow.
I'm not the biggest fan of Hardstyle, but there are some good tracks from it, but I don't like it in the Hardcore we'd hear in this country.
Brisk always played at the speeds I like, especially at Kinetic fast as fk, Mikey B was similar, and Demand, they played a lot quicker, in fact most people played fast as fk there. Apart from Dougal, who was consistently slow. And he wasn't as popular for it.
around 190bpm is decent. People start getting pissy for music that fast, but then its fking hardcore.
I listen to the World of Rave podcast Slipmatt does , it's pretty decent to listen to, good memories, but bores me when live. Last party I went to, Slipmatt played at that speed, was OK, Shades of Rhythym did too, was again nice cos it was nostalgia, but then Sy turned up and played 90's hardcore and I lost the plot, that energy came back n we was off at the races.

I HATE it. It just feels like an attempt to get a bigger following.
They are trying to appeal to the Hardstyle audience to get in at their festivals & events. All about money again.
Hardcore should be played at 170 minimum. I know there are some classic UK Hardcore tracks that are slower. Did you know You?re my angel is 167 BPM but it should be played faster than that. I have always wanted to play faster in my own mixes but it concerns me that people won?t like the faster speed.
Even Hixxy said a few months ago that hardcore is at 170. It?s at 1 minute 24 seconds.
I can instantly tell when something comes on if it?s slower then it instantly gets turned off.
If they want freedom in production then go make something else at that speed don?t call it hardcore!!!! It?s NOT hardcore!!!!

Hasn't Dougal always played slower? I've heard that most of his 90's Bonkers mixes were below 170
And Joey Riot playing slow? Well maybe when he's with Dougal, but with Destructive Tendencies? I rarely believe they go below 185 there

Your exactly right. Seems to be more about money than keeping it real.
Every time I listen to Hardcore djs playing this 160 shit I fast forward to the faster tracks or listen to another mix.

Yeah Brisk has never watered down his Hardcore sets. Slipmatt did play 170 round 2007 and then went back to House speed again.

But... 1992 Breakbeat stuff is Hardcore. It was called Hardcore way before Happy and UK stuff.
I wouldn't even bother mentioning Vibes, Slipmatt & Seduction. They no longer produce UK Hardcore.
As for speeds. 170-175 is fast enough for UK Hardcore IMO.

What the tracks were produced at and what they are played are used to be 2 different things.
As I said before, Kinetic, everything was faster, apart from Dougal, who insisted on keeping the slower pace.
I've heard Sy play at Brisk speed, on his own, not b2b with Brisk. In fact I remember one night in Wales, Sy played a mega hard set with a lot of Dutch hardcore at the time, was mad tbh.
Hardcore needs to be fast and needs the energy, otherwise it's simply not hardcore.
As for Riot playing fast not in DT, its a different genre. Has to be fast.
