since i know most of you people are decent and helpful
i was wondering if any of you could tell me how to start up my own BASIC home studio
i have no idea what i would need and no idea of how much
so if any of you kind people could give me just a BASIC list of equiptment and prices to get me started makin' tunes for the scene i would be very grateful indeed
PS - bearing in mind i have an iMac with Mac Os 9 ( shite i know so dont comment )

hmm, first of all get the software, fruity loops, cubase and reason i say were the best, get used to them. then start getting the hardware, , i dont really know much about the hardware, but someone else will post here, with all the info you need

Well considering you have a Mac you are either limited or liberated, it depends how you look at it.
For Mac you can and should get Reason 2.5. That proggy comes in a Mac flavour and should be where you start, because it can and will really help you if and when you plan to expand out of the home and into the garge.
From then on you could and probably should get Cubase (I've heard you can get that for Mac) or Logic (pretty sure you can get that on Mac too)
If you want to move out of the garage and into the freshly built recording studio you just built and still want to use your Mac then you have the Pro Tools option, but thats really not for Home users now is it??

I would also suggest getting:
a) a decent soundcard. If you've got an imac this will probably have to be a usb device, but just make sure it has nice low latency
and
b) some sort of keyboard, either with or without sounds. for the time being I would recomend one without, and then keep all your sounds within the mac and save any complications regarding mixers etc
after that you will need some sort of sequencer. What you go for is purely a matter of choice. There are 2 flavours of sequencer. The traditional sequencer (cubase, logic (my fave!), Digital Performer etc) and the virtual studio (Reason, Fruity Loops (isn't this PC only?) etc). What you go for is purely down to you. Everybody has their faves, the one that they work best with, and you'll just have to try each one and decide for yourself. I suggest you get demoes of each one and just have a play, asking for help when needed!!

Hi, this one of the most expencive ways but it works, you need to
know how rebirth works, and then buy the electreble systems from Korg.
And if you want to do it much cheaper, work with fruttyloops,rebirht and FMSYNTH.
But everybody work on there own way, so just try and you will see what
is the best for you, you can go to an music store.

Fruityloops will never be avaible for Mac becuase it is written in delphi. Unless somehow you get the code and then try to recompile it on a Mac. But even then I don't think that delphi is available for Mac. Heh.

one thing i must say is don't belive all the crap about the so called "fundimental" hardware you need to make hardcore, for example a TR-909 (the real hardware version) i hate all the crap people that see you need this you need that, those are the fools that don't know about the cheap ways with just as good effect as the real hardware ones, do just use Rebirth if you want the 909 etc and laff at the idiots that actually save up for them! I can get the rebirth 909/808/303 to sound BETTER than the REAL ones, so middle fingers UP and high to all the pro's who think they are cool coz they wasted money on the real ones. HAHAHAHAH! FOOLS!

My home studio consists of the following (no hardware):

-FLStudio 4 (Once again, cannot stop singing its praises! 64 mixer channels with panning, 3-band parametric EQ and stereo seperation built in as -well- as 8 additional FX slots, both acid-style loop based and classic FL style pattern-based sequencing, full VST2.0 support, thousands of samples pre-packed and it's got features that appeal to everyone from beginner to expert - it's both easy to enough that you can churn out a track on it with no experience at all and complex enough that you can make your way through thousands of tweakable parameters for everything! I love it! On the fair side though, it's a bit rough in the final mixdown and you'll be tweaking your final mastering settings until the cows come home.)
-Native Instruments Absynth 2 (...No comments necessary. This synth, with enough work, can make ANY sound. It is so spooky to listen to sometimes...)
-Native Instruments FM7 (Wonderful FM-based synthesizer. Once again, insanely powerful in the right hands and it comes with enough presets to suffice you for quite some time, especially the 'trance' preset (think the lead to 'beat the system')
-ReFX JunoX2 (Juno emulator... classy phat analog sound! Great for bright sweeping pads and euphoric riffs)
-Waldorf Attack (Great drumsynth, very powerful, lots of parameters, 32 drums per kit.)
-Steinberg HalION (Great sampler! Nothing more to say!)
There's lots more in the kit (Muon's Tau Pro 303-emulator and Triangle II, for example) but this should be enough to get you started in any kind of hardcore.

Okay..so to everyone who responded to the original Q...What if you dont have an iMac??? Would you recommend getting one?? or if not..what would be the best way to go in order to be able to use the best software available? Is it better to have an iMac..or does that limit what you can do?

If you want to take things past a BASIC studio in the future, then I would not reccomend getting an iMac (unless you are OK with getting rid in a few years time!). There are limitiations on upgrading it, and IMO you would be better getting either a 'proper' Mac (Those new G5s look well nice!!) if you can afford it, or otherwise go and get a PC. The beauty of these two systems is that you can customise it to exactly what you want over time..... get the perfect soundcard for you, maybe a dualhead graphics card so you can run 2 montiors, and of course with teh iMac you are stuck with that monitor, so if you wanted a bigger screen....tough!! etc etc
