first things first i managed to sort out midi and get it going 100% whoever said it was mme settings was spot on,well done.
moving on to audio,took me a while to get this going and i discovered that it was coming out of my xg card (i got an xg and sb live in use) and not the sb live like i wanted. but audio for everything else (cd player,mp3 player etc) comes out of the sb live it's just audio in cubase and basically i've no idea how to change it so it works with the sb live 
the reason i want audio from the sb live is because the quality's poor from the xg and ultra distorted from sending out too much,even if i turn down every volume control for xg wave audio it's really quiet but still distorted like mad.
so,er,any help would be appreciated. cheers
