Friend of mine uses Reason for production, he makes damn fine drum n bass.
It has everything you need to produce. If you like it and can make some cool stuff with it, go for it.
Collaborating with other artists might be a bit more difficult. Not sure how many use Reason.
Though not to say it is impossible to collab, I've collaborated with my Reason using friend before.

I still use version 4, though re-wired into Cubase. On it's own there's a lot you can do with it. The downside was always needing an external wave editor for chopping up samples and such. If you have an original copy of Reason 5, I seriously suggest upgrading to Reason 7, since it has now incorporated audio recording and editing; is now 64-bit, all for like $130!
on making hardcore with it...
Sound is Sound. Every DAW has been proven effective in the right hands.

It's like an all-in-one box DAW and probably like if you are thinking of fiddling with any 3rd party plugins, you'll have to setup your rewire channels to a secondary DAW with Rewire support to use it. Reason's more like a mixing / recording DAW, it has amazing synths like Thor and Maelstrom that are pretty powerful. You could get proper sounding hard synths from Thor tbh.
Check out the sounds of North Core Project and they were using Reason 3 for their hands up productions back in '04 like this track below:
If you're thinking of mastering in Reason at a later stage, you could do so but it doesn't provide your mastering standard level / loudness meters (e.g. K-12/K14/K-20 meters / Dorrough meters / RMS level meters) that will keep you in track after each processing. And the bit depth support for Reason's export is 16 or 24 bit. You won't be able to hit 32 or 32-bit floating point for high quality export.
Try to get a proper mastering suite like Steinberg Wavelab which has proper metering and tools for editing your start/end-points of your tracks.
Anyway, it really depends on what your production needs are when choosing a DAW. You could use a hipster DAW (like me using MAGIX Samplitude / Sequoia) or a popular DAW like FL Studio / Cockos Reaper and you can still make a proper stomper. Reason will eventually get you somewhere if you take some time to sit down and learn how to exploit its functions.
If you are thinking of doing collabs, and you know that Reason's a hipster DAW (since most hardcore producers use FL Studio / Cubase / Logic Pro / Ableton Live), take time to understand another popular DAW and this will solve your collab worries.

Reason 5 is pretty limited these days. I currently use reason 7 and I would say it's worth the upgrade. You have full audio editing features and 3rd party rack extensions.
