Does anyone else think the UK has gone way too far with immigration? I've got friends who are from different backgrounds and I do think overseas people have brought a lot of good to the UK over the years.

But the way I see it, it seems to be going too far now. UK has a tiny land mass as it is and there is not really loads of work and as much prosperity as there used to be.
But for some reason the government is still letting in millions of people and there is talk of the U.Ks population possibly hitting over 70 million in the next decade, wtf?.

What's worse, a lot of them are going straight on welfare and you've got hard working British people that have been here all their lives and struggling on a pension.
I just think there should be a balance here and keeps England to be England. And not turn it into one of these countries migrants have escaped from.

Maybe it's just me and I'm wrong and seeing things differently by living in London. I don't mean to offend anyone, but just seems to a constant topic in the work place and in a lot of the media.

100% yes, far too many immigrants in the uk and the population is already far too much considering the size. Government really needs to crack down on it, a lot of them come for the free health service which everyone else pays for while they do their dodgy cash in hand jobs. Pisses me off, try doing the same in America or Australia and its a lot harder to do, the uk needs to do this also

yeah its not that bad when you're outside of the cities, I'm in cumbria and you don't really get that feeling at all. plenty of space in the UK, just people don't want to build on green sites ;)

have a flick through this article, its not as bad as you think

though the whole "a lot of them are going straight on welfare" sounds more like an opinion than a fact (and in comparison to what?).
I left to move to America in 2003, got back in 2007 and the makeup of englands people had changed a hell of alot (border controls were dropped whilst I was away). But cuturally I don't think it was a bad thing at all. Nice melting pot here. We still aren't as diverse as America (but we arent at all far behind)

A very balanced reply. I like it. In reply to the original post, this is a very very common complaint however it is often just thinly veiled racism or general dislike of certain people coming into the country (while never complaining about people coming from say America or Australia etc) as far as i can tell. However you raise a good point with overpopulation.

The welfare argument is bogus. If all you're bothered about is economics, then migrants bring a hell of a lot more to the UK than they take away, and frankly without them our woeful levels of growth would be a lot worse. If you want to talk about cultural clashes and British society becoming a bit too passive and a bit too PC then there's certainly a discussion to be had there.

On a side note, was anyone else seriously surprised to see that the fifth largest foreign-born population in England and Wales was German? Didn't see that coming.

Yeah. Don't see many of them. Not compared to other people anyway.

I'm what they would call here "immigration critical" or how the pro immigration people would say "racist".

I have no problem of people from other nationalities coming here. The biggest problems, in my opinion, come from our welfare system. It was not designed for this. People from other countries come here for better living standards and live off welfare. And they will stay on it as long as they are here. 90% of Somalis that come here can't read or write, they are competing in the job market with the same people that are constantly topping the PISA scores. There is no competition. According to government statistics people from Sudan, Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan and Myanmar have an unemployment rate higher then 50% (about the same nationalities shine on the assault and rape statistics). The more people that come from these countries, the higher strain it will have on our welfare system. On the other side, you have people from Asian countries, Kenya, Ghana etc that have a very small unemployment rate.

We (in Finland) should dramatically cut welfare from non Finnish citizens, and take away that reason for immigration, that it is for so many. Require a job or a way to get by from people coming to live here. We would still get people that actually want to contribute to Finland, possibly their new homeland. But the people that only come for the benefits, would be cut off. Though for solidarity we should still allow a manageable amount of refugees in.

Just as many people leave this country as move to Britain. There seems to be two reasons why people don't want immigrants moving here.
1) They take our jobs
2) They claim benefits.
Make your minds up ffs.
Britain has always been a melting pot. The English are immigrants and not ethnic Britains, if we can put up with them lot for the last millenium don't see what the problem with other immigrants joining us.
People should stop reading racist claptrap like the Mail, and actually do some research and find out some actual facts before spouting molten horseshit that is thinly veiled racism.

Regarding the welfare points, is there any actual data to back up the notion that they come over and just live off welfare?

This all reminds me of the "Welfare Queen" horseshit that Reagan started here in the U.S back in the 70's. Not saying that the situation is the same in Finland, though.

What type of data are you talking about? Reports that from some countries people don't come to work here? Reports of unemployment rates?

EDIT: ...and to clarify, me saying "living of welfare" means they are de facto living of welfare. i.e. the statistics are grossly disproportional. And few years ago our welfare system was the most generous in the whole of Europe, possibly the world (regarding benefits to immigrants). There has been changes since then, but don't know to which areas.
