I'm looking to expand my rock collection, in particular with songs that have a focus on melodic elements. Massive bonus points if it's of the harder variety. I apologize for all of this being video game music, but it should help define what kind of styles I'm looking for:
That last one does have some synthesizer action in it; while it's nice, I'd like to avoid heading into synthrock territory if possible.

melodic? then you should try some more heavy/symphonic metal
Heavy Metal that has orchestra/symphonic melody Rhapsody / Rhapsody of Fire (IT) - The first metal group I actualyl got into, very melodic and especially the orchestra is like taken from a movie. And all their studio albums are linked into one story (well almost, the same world but depicted in 2 different eras)! Occationally sings in Italian.
Track to listen to: Emerald Sword
Dragonland (SE) - Like Rhapsody. I just got into this group, which has a fairly the same concept as Rhapsody (about story albums, but only 3 of them are).
Track to listen to: This is a very new group for me, but so far I like Astronomy
Dark Moor (ES) - Not much to say. Kinda like Rhapsody, some tracks are in Spanish.
Track to listen to: For Her
Speed Metal with symphonic melody Blind Guardian (DE) - Speed Metal turned into symphonic metal group.
Track to listen to: A Voice in the Dark
Generic(?) Heavy Metal/Rock Stratovarious (FI) - The second group I got into. Especially Liked Black Diamond
Track to listen to: Black Diamond or Infernal Maze
Edguy (DE) - A Speed Metal group (?) that plays mixed Rock and Heavy Metal. sometimes these guys have to much fun on their albums (singing about sex in funny ways :P)
Track to listen to: Speedhoven

Yeah I think I recall posting Lavatory Love Machine on here once before!
Also - You're from Sweden and you don't mention Therion? I am confused?!
Talking of Tobias Sammet, I can highly recommend his other project "Avantasia", I mean he collabs with some top talent, including people like Alice Cooper...
As for old rock, my favourite group from England is Magnum (they just never got the credit they deserved and they've been going since...1972!):
Here's one from 1978...
It wouldn't be me if I didn't post a Therapy? track (because I just love that snare drum)...
Finally here is something very special, that everyone should listen to, amazing piece of music...

Simon: Because even tho I've had a few Rhapsody CDs since 2006, I never got into metal until 2009 :P

Not really into rock, some good Finnish ones:
Yeah, Whispering! I like Sonata Arctica as well. They have developed pretty well in the past since I have seen them live on stage when they still were a supporting act on a Nightwish tour.

I've been out of touch with metal in general for a while but suggest you look for Cacophony (Jason Becker & Marty Friedman) , and Racer X.

What about rock?
nah. nothing you probably haven't heard already. To me, rock is the predecessor of metal so any of the classic bands goes, as far as I'm concerned. (Black Sabbath, Jimmy Hendrix, Guns and Roses, Led Zeppelin, Metallica. etc). Those are the bands I started out with when I picked up the guitar and that gradually lead to shred metal, the epitome of rock guitar, imo.

did you inlcude Black Sabbath and Metallica into the Rock category? Wasn't Black Sabbath the frontgroup for Metal? =P
And didn't Metallica go the other way. From some gritty angry Metal to Rock?
