If it started to charge you to use it? (I know they have their fancy gold and platinum things that charge you)and I'm not sure about how other countries work, but there is a strong hint that free banking in the UK will eventually stop. Basically to pay for all its mistakes, they are thinking of making us pay to access our money, I think if it does happen, in the long run it could see the end od banks alltogether

How many people would just roll over and grumble about it though?

There was a big effort last year here in the US to have people switch from big-name banks to small local banks or credit unions. Even though only about 100,000 ppl (give or take a few) participated in it, it did influence the big banks' decisions to postpone or cancel increasing fees or adding new ones.
I currently am with Bank of America, notorious for terrible practices and customer service. My student acct will expire soon, which means I have to meet guidelines like have 1,000 in the acct at all times and/or have a minimum of 250 of direct deposit a month. Both easy things to do to keep it free, and I currently do the latter.
Also I'm impressed with their security. Twice they put a stop on my debit card b/c of suspicious activity. First time around I swiped my card 3 times on a store machine that wasn't working properly. The last time it happened a couple weeks ago. Apparently 1 of the places I used my debit card within the last 6 months had a breach and numbers were stolen, including mine. They closed that card and sent me a new one asap. Great customer service on my end.
So I guess that is a longwinded way of me saying that I would not leave my bank anytime soon because it has been good to me, and I meet the guidelines in order for my acct to be free.

Considered it, but HSBC seems so stable while just about every other bank wobbles.

that's weird. the Banks in Sweden seems to be able to take out huge amount of winnings. If they did this in Sweden, I'd say there'd be a uproar.

we've already moved banks before, and would happily do it again.

I would immediately move to one that wasn't charging. I don't know what I'd do if they all charged because I can't think of any other way they would allow you to pay your mortgage. If it was an option I'd just leave banks altogether.
Personally I can't see it happening any time soon though, some of them are still paying us to bank with them! They must know a lot of people will jump ship and whoever doesn't charge will gain a monopoly. I guess they could just form a cartel though because nobody will challenge it when it's the banks! :(

I doubt they will all go to paid banking, as other banks will just use the moment to pull customers from others.

I agree with what AW and the Triqster said.
I changed banks a few years ago because of rubbish service, and if my current bank went the same way i'd do it again. The idea of banks charging customers to enable them to cover their mistakes at our expense annoys me ever so slightly. They already make money out of us and we get pathetic interest rates as a reward.
Obviously there's always the risk of making a mistake and ending up with an even worse service but apart from losing all your money what could possibly go wrong?!

AFAIK all finnish banks charge for using the bank (it's only a few euros a month or something, don't remember). Though online stuff is free. But because i have a huge mortgage i get bonuses, with those bonuses i pay all bank fees and my home insurance.

My bank charges me unless I have a certain amount of money in the bank, or certain amount of direct deposit every month (which I meet).

What like energy companies do? As soon as one puts its price up, they all follow suit, you would think one of them would say hang on a minute , if we keep are prices the same, then think of all those 1000's of customers we could get. But never happens because its called greed, and banks are even more notorious for it.
