I'm having trouble replicating the "background" percussion on this track. What I'm after starts at 0:19 and is panned slightly to the right:

It has a really good rhythm to it. What percussive instrument is it even supposed to be (or is it just synthesized, or is it just something like a heavily-EQed darbuka?)?

Sounds like someone whacking a pole with the a slower attack :P Don't know if you've got any poles lying about but you could always find a pack of random ass sounds and try getting a metallic sounding one, turn the attack down a little and tweak it.

As for the rhythm... I'll draw it :P

B-P-B---BP--BP--

B being the beat, P being the pole and - being empty space / other sounds (I'm only noting the beat and pole because they're important)

But hey, I could be wrong (I've never been excellent at visualising / explaining rhythmic patterns), or I could've completely misinteprated you :P Either way, I hope I was of some help lol

Made ya a midi and I tweaked a sound to make it like the one in the song - let me know if it works out for you.

Also, I think it's a flute breath note sound.

Not sure if we're thinking of the same sound in the song here, sounds way to clangy to be a flute :P

It does indeed have a very metallic sound to it. I remember achieving a similar sound by slowing down a crash cymbal.

Here's a quick example I've made: http://soundcloud.com/ranzor/metallic-sounds/s-BgY31. You can of course experiment with it a bit more until you get the desired sound.
