What's the difference between a bootleg and a remix?

For example:
[Original artist] - Track name ([artist name] Remix)
[Original artist] - Track name ([artist name] Bootleg)

Remixes are usually sanctioned. Meaning the artist has permission to use any stems or parts (usually vocals) from the original track.

Bootlegs usually don't.

I thought bootleg typically meant (illegally) recorded from a live show or similar.

It may also be worth noting that a bootleg may be a remix that the remixer doesnt want publicised as a remix. It's why you see bootlegs released under "Anon" or an anonymous name. Similarly you have Bootleg labels such as "Baked Potato" and "**** Vinyl". Alternatively, people will credit the track as their own, which will avoid putting down the original artists' name and makes it harder to identify as a bootleg.
Stating a bootleg as a remix has it's dangers. You're easier to find by labels, and they can pull copyright at will.
I had to rename my remix of LMFAO Champagne Showers to "Champoo Showering" and credit it to myself which was an annoyance
:D

bootleg is illegal/unlicensed reproduction of someone elses work. I presume both recording it and remixing/producing a copy/remix goes into the same category.

Alright, I see. Now it's all starting to make sense to me.

So that explains all those 'Anons'...

I guess this would mean I was incorrectly naming my bootlegs as remixes the whole time. Oh well, I don't think people would really care about these titles anyway.
