Again, very very good man. I've never really paid the attention I should do to Hard Trance. It's a struggle to just keep up with Hardcore, to be honest. This album you're doing sounds interesting though - what's the plan with that?
I didn't know there was an original either. Just found it on the 3form Records page. Has that actually been released yet? It's not overly clear.
Did you ever decide on a new alias?

Cheers Jay. :) I know what you're saying, I listen to a few genres and I just get lost in all the releases now things have gone digital haha.
I'm basically going to doing an album of mainly Hard Trance remixes of my Freeform stuff (plus some original bits) and either have it for DL for a small fee or HOPEFULLY get it on a 2 disk proper CD and knock them out at a cheap price. That would be all the tracks unmixed on one disk and a mix on the other for those that don't DJ. That may be a bit risky though as nobody will know who I am in the Hard Trance scene haha. See how things go in the meantime.
Hmm I think I'm going to go with The Overseer as it sounds like a Hard Trance sort of name... I hadn't settled 100% yet though.

Veeerry interesting.
Good luck with it mate. A double CD would be brilliant. Obviously a lot more work/money/risk involved, but people tend to forget about download albums pretty quickly. The cheap, unmixed CD format seems to be doing really well now as well. Quite a few out recently, and they all seem to have sold well. Craig's managed to shift a load of his remaining stock of NSR albums, as another example. I could be wrong, but I think it might be possible that people are in the mind-set these days - or are slowly coming around to the mind-set - of, "Fcuking hell, there's just far too much being released to be checking every day", and a nice, quantifiable, more permanent kind of release/product is becoming more appealing again. Just as a means to be able to distance themselves from the mire of the digital market.
Dunno, just a thought.
The Overseer. I like it, but I reckon you can do better. And I reckon you think the same. When it comes to names, unless you're like "Yes, bang! That's it!" right away, you always have a bit of doubt. Don't rush it Gaz! It'll come.

Cheers mate. A lot more involved for sure but its nice to have a goal to work towards and a proper end product in your hands at the end of all them long nights. Even if I can make it break even thats more than worth it for me, will be fun!
I think (& hope) youre right with the whole CD thing. I currently find the digital system doesnt really work because I just cant be bothered and dont have the time to sift through all that music. Back when things where strictly vinyl I listened to every single release (and purchased most of them). These days there is too much on the DL sites and there is absolutely no sense of urgency to rush out and buy a release, its not like they are going to sell out.
Yeah I'll keep thinking but if I can't come up with another name I'll fall back on this one. I've thought of a fair few but they are all taken so I've got very tired of thinking of them!

I love you so much for your musical brain but at this moment I hate you as there is no download button. I am drunk and high and not willing to read the other comments, so if this has been covered I am sorry. But I shall favourite and I shall listen and I shall love because you KNOW good music and I have faith in your judgement! :)
Edit: Download button or riot!
:)

Just blasted this out and woke up half the neighbourhood, superb stuff. Good sampling going on in there (always adds a lot to a tune imo), like the riffs and that little drum roll for the build up. I await with great anticipation for the entire Hard Trance Album that you're making mate.

Just started it, love the fat bass at the start.
Maybe it's just me, but I found the melody felt a bit lacking, empty. Like it could use with some filling. I don't know if you're looking for a hand's up feel or something darker, but maybe including another layer another octave up as well as one or two an octave or two down. That might make the bass to muddy on top of the current bassline, I'm not sure.
Sorry, a bit more thinking, it sounded very tight, almost forced (other ways of describing the same thing, yes but it honestly feels like there isn't a lot of fun to it). Maybe play around with the left & right sides instead of putting everything straight down the middle. My battery is dying rapidly so not sure if you did but didn't hear anything like that on the one listen I've had. Check http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wOF0Xhen0s to get an idea of what I mean.

Ah good stuff, I was worried about the bass so happy to hear that. 8) The lead has about 7 layers already haha. I'll play around with the levels of them though, perhaps some need turning up or down to make it seem phatter.
Are you talking about the lead or just in general? I've got the percussion panned and some panning effects on the intro sounds. I could try and add some more interest in that department though. :) I don't like to pan things too heavily though because you can lose stuff when it's played on a mono system. Will listen to the clip when I get in, at work right now. Cheers for the feeback mate!

Note: going from memory.
The bass is funny. In parts its really strong but not in others. It's like for a bar or two of a standard four bar set it's there but then sort of fades for the next eight beats.
The lead has seven layers? I couldn't pick that. I think I'm talking about the lead. I guess what I'm talking about is that particularly in the more progressive tracks, many seperate themes are added throughout. Now I know it's not a progressive track, but the same idea still stands somewhat, that other stuff is added throughout to build a bit. Maybe instead of the same an octave lower perhaps try a harmony melody?
I really need to listen to it again before you take me seriously on this one.

So I've finally found time to sit down and listen to this one several times through and contrast it to a few other tracks. I've also swapped headphones to a more balanced pair. Funnily enough I find the bass in them both louder and clearer because in removing the thump and feel of bass and bassline it removes some of the muddiness and coagulation that con occur in the bass as well as increasing the audibility in terms of pure frequency not just power. Hence this time I found the bass line coming through much stronger than before.
Technically: You said you were a bit worried about the bass line. I might be missing something. I feel like I am. The bass line I am hearing is very much in the upper bass registers, almost the lower mids than bass. My typical knowledge of hard trance (of the 04-06 era) is that the bass line very much compliments the kick and is nearly in the same registers rather than just adding another layer. It could even be taken as a bottom level to the melody if it wasn't so low with nothing in between.
Other than that I can't altogether fault it technically but there is something about the track that grates against me. I really can't figure out what it is. However if you could do me a favour...
Play around with it. In particular, time stretching. If I had to put money on what was bothering me, it would be the speed/complexity of the melody. I've been playing around with it a bit in audacity, changing speed here, tempo there. Taking an assumed bpm of 160, I dropped it to 145. It made the kick very slow and so it seemed to create teh feeling of draggin the track down. But that's just it, the kick sounded like it was dragging the song because the melody sounded fine at that pace. If the melody was at the right pace in the first place the kick shouldn't sound like it was dragging upon reducing tempo. In addition, upon doing a proper time stretch, so lowering pitch as well as slowing tempo, I thought it sounded more natural and honestly, better.
Now, it's quite possible that 150bpm sounds nicer than 145, but the latter shows a clear difference to 160. While 150 is noticable, humans are very poor at spotting diferences of less than 10% when it comes to absolutely anything quantitative. Maybe try a combination of changing speed and pitch? Say, timestretch by 6.2% and then drop pitch by 2.92% That would get you the same pitch as dropping from 160 to 145 but at bpm of 150 instead.
What do you think?
