I dunno about you, but before I was even aware of hardcore I used to listen to soppy American pop punk as a young lad, and I used to go to loads of gigs. Jimmy Eat World were/are one of my favourite musical preferences ever. They are the more serious side of teenage pop punk/emo. Not quite as gay/Emo as The Get Up Kids, but not a million miles away.

This really isn't gonna be to everyone's taste, but all comments are welcome. Here's two of my personal favourites from them. They do more upbeat stuff as well, but I always prefered their atmospheric, feel-sorry-for-your-self-slit-your-wrist-stuff.

As much as it pains me to agree with you Jay, i too (despite being considerably older than you) am partial to a bit of this kind of stuff. Never fully into the Emo sound of things but more the poppier and harder stuff either side of it.

I know it doesn't really pain you Dean. But you have to save face, so I understand.

And my word, it was only recently that I realised just how much older you actually are!

I'm still meeting you for beers and banter when I get back to England though. :-)

Yes!! I still do love pop-punk, there are a few 'mainstream' hits by Jimmy Eat World that I like (The middle, Sweetness, Always Be) but I have to say I was mainly a Blink 182 fan. Dude Ranch and Enema of the State era mainly. I love all those days though when I was about 12-13 and everyone would be skateboarding around and imitating Jackass stuff, I don't think I ever really grew out of that mentality unfortunately lol

I saw Blink at Hammersmith Apollo years ago. Awesome. My big favourites were New Found Glory. Saw them a number of times. So good live. Still listen to them regularly, although their new stuff is a bit - I dunno, like they're running out of ideas. Only so many tunes you can write about being a douche and never getting the girl.

This won't help my reputation much, but when I went crowd-surfing at my first ever gig, I was so closed to getting fingered in the arse it's unbelievable. Some homosexual swine was trying to work his way in there. I was violently kicking and punching randomly, and manged to get to the ground just in the nick of time. Ridiculed by my mates for years. Needless to say, I went crowd surfing at every possible opportunity from that point on.

I was gonna say Sum 41 but their hardcore fans always say that they're strictly not pop-punk. I only really remember Fat Lip which was such an era-defining song. "Trashed my own house party 'cos nobody came" so true of so many teenagers at the time.

also LOL at the crowdsurfing, I've never even been to a concert before, only raves. I was gonna see Blink in London this july but I think they've cancelled until later for the release of their new album but I just hope they play loads of their old enema stuff because I don't care about their sad kinda stuff.
