When you're listening to the music, and not a rave?

This.
Such a joke when an MC does that. Here's an example (and I'll upload the clip if I can get around to it). On the CD pack for HTID In The Sun 2008, Squad-E is playing Can't Buy My Love, by Re-Con & Squad-E. The song builds to its wicked chorus, and just lets go into stompy madness. At the peak of this, you can hear MC Enemy shouting at Squad-E: "Squad-E!!......Squad-E!!..........Squad-E, stop the music!!......Oi!". This goes on for almost 30 seconds. I don't know if Squad-E couldn't hear him, or just was ignoring him, but eventually he stops the music - bang in the middle of the most dance-able part of the tune. Everyone must have been loving it up until then. So the music stops, and instantly, Enemy goes "If you want some more hardcore, make some noise - now!". Erm, what the fcuk mate? Yes I do want some more hardcore actually, but until you interrupted, the amount of hardcore I was experiencing was sufficient. Why have you not only stopped my Hardcore supply, but also totally killed the vibe on the dance floor? Just so you could shout that out? Wtf? Really.

this happens a lot... why they ask an hardcore crowd in the middle of the right if they want more hardcore is laughable... nah mate... bang some dubstep on instead lol...

Just because some MC's are a bit of a joke these days it dosn't mean they always were, much like the music itself. Also (and this is not directed at Jay by the way) Hardcore events aren't put on so you can listen to them at home after, so the fact you don't like MC's in the recording means nothing.

I know what you're saying, Matt. I'm trying to really be honest with myself and think how I've felt about MCs at raves. I don't know - would a rave be better without them? It's difficult to say. For all the criticisms of Storm, for example, there's one thing you can't fault him for - and that's his unbelievable passion. No idea how old the guy is - late thirties maybe? - but the amount of events he must MC at, and still gets genuinely excited on that stage - and that definitely translates to the crowd. I know I've felt myself becoming more excited in lulls in tracks where he's been delivering some ecstasy themed reassurances/guidelines - "close your eyes, feel the rush" etc.
That said, I've been at events where MCs have pissed me off too. There's a fine line that a lot of MCs always seem to cross. You're on that stage to aid the DJ, to enhance the experience for the crowd. You're not there to be centre of attention. I despise the "I'm the best, no one can touch me" attitude. I'm not saying all MCs adhere to that, but the ones that do seriously fcuk me off.
What I can categorically say is that I can think of zero mixes I've listened to (studio mixes) and have enjoyed where an MC is hosting.
Edit: Let me rephrase that line above. I can think of zero mixes that an MC has hosted, where I feel his presence has enhanced the mix.
Just a random thought - does anyone know of any female MCs?

If i came into the scene in recent years i would hate MC's too. The role they now seem to play is very annoying. Far too much focus on them and far too much ego. Before then though things were very different and still are in the back rooms. MC's should hype the crowd but not draw the attention to them that much and also not be seperated from the crowd itself. These days it's like they have their own stage and demand attention as if they themselves are as important as the music which is just rediculous. Go to any Gabber room with Ribbz MC'ing and you will get the real deal, absolutely amazing MC and i find it hard to imagine how anyone could not like him, even if you don't normally like MC's. The MC'ing you're thinking of i definately dislike too but things were very different previously in most cases.

well said right there
and hardcore needing it to get the party started so that ppl won't get violent? that makes no sense. ravers aren't prisoners that will riot if there's no mc, at least i hope they aren't lol.
i find it a real problem when ppl say that hardcore needs an mc to get the crowd going. that pretty much saying that hardcore music isn't doing enough of a job as a motivator. which is ridiculous, especially when slower more boring genres like electro and dub do a great enough job on their own to hype up the crowd. ppl have just deluded themselves into believing that they are an absolute necessity in the scene and the more involvement, the better. totally not true.
and there were MCs in toronto while hullabaloo was still around, and there are some here in the US right now too. and djs here in the US do some of their own MCing too. but they're not as excessive as the ones over where you are at. and trust me the lack of an mc does not affect the vibe at all the ravers here are totally into the music.

you cant listen to a full mix these days without some MC blabbing his useless, pointless, rapper wannabe fluffy rhymes all over the ****ing music.
i listen to a lot of trance... not once do i hear a MC... i hear music, the music i want to hear... hardcore is becomimng unlistenable... not coz the music is shite... but because MCs chat pure shit all over it.... im not talking personal mixes that get posted on here and various other places around the web... im talking live rave recordings... where u hear the latest tunes... where its more pitched up... where its nice and loud.. where the atmosphere is...
Are MCs needed in hardcore?
Discuss?
I agree bet you never thought you would ever see the day i agreed with something you said?

I've been to a lot of raves which have been really friendly, but also on the flipside I've been to raves which have definitely not been friendly and I think an MC is a presence that's necessary in those cases. I dunno it's a bit like having a teacher, their job isn't to enforce rules or anything but in the wrong place their absence could lead to people being a bit naughty.

Eh? Surely you're not suggesting that the almighty god-like MC has the power to prevent trouble at events!

I don't think they can really prevent it, but if they weren't there I reckon they'd break out more often. Maybe it's human monkey instincts or something.

I can only speak for myself, but if there is some muppet in the front and permanently talking rubbish during the best parts of a track, I would become aggresive and feel the need to throw sth in his/her direction.
