Is anyone into the sound that Sharkey was really pushing around the Bonkers 3-5 compilations? In my local record shop the stuff that Sharkey was playing used to be in a sub genre section of hardcore called trancecore. Now when I look back at it, it doesn't sound too much different to happy hardcore of the time but just that a little bit darker and sinister.

A great label, Stompin' Choonz was putting out quality stuff in the style.

You always hear revivals of sounds in music, Nu skool/old breaks, jungle stuff is always getting re done and re hashed. But I doubt anyone trys to capture the amazing the core bass drums and pads and synths of hardcore like this stuff. I find this sound alot more pure. Real and genuine than this over produced commercial hardcore that we know today.

Hopefully some of you might know where I'm coming from. I'm sure I'm in the minority, Such a long time ago, my friends certainly aren't into it any more. I've only posted bonkers mix videos for ease but please do post tracks from the time and style.

You're not in the minority that you think you are. A very large ammount (when it comes to dedicated Hardcore fans that is) of people love this sound and the Freeform that followed, me included.

FINALLY, it's about time someone put this on youtube! It's my favourite Freeform tune when it comes to that kind of sound. I love this stuff because it's Hardcore in it's purest form, that dosn't copy from any other genre.

I guess when you don't have anyone to talk to about the stuff with for the last 10 years, i came to the conclusion no body liked it!

I haven't heard this one. It's got a pretty mature sound for '99. Nice.

Anything alittle darker or heavier welcome also.

The heavier stuff is what i like most! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgM8gnfaja4 Dosn't get much better than this. And for later stuff:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=peA7rwzGsa8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnYDG3-G8jA

etc..

While Freeform was great in the 90's i think it really peaked around 2002.

Yes, defo a fan the Marc Smith stuff.

Can't find a link to a direct track so have to be a bonkers one again

I really like the heavy gabba style kiks along side the subtle cheesy synths. Followed by fillthy acid lines. Just wicked.

I'm into the gabba hardcore stuff that scorpio, producer, and clarkee were playing around 95-98, so this stuff is like a more mellow area to set my ears.

AC Slater - Overdose is wicked. Drum and bass/jungle sounds so much better sat in between hardcore.

Do you or anyone know any producer, amatuer or otherwise trying to capture the sound? Every now is obviously going to sound new but try and get a 'vintage sound' myself at home, would be wicked to here new oldskool stuff. I don't think it would ever take of commercially but still you know...

Don't get me wrong by the way in general i much much prefer 90's Hardcore but when it comes to Freeform i feel that it peaked around 2002ish. Unfortunately there isn't really anyone going for the old sound apart from the very occasional tune, it is truly long gone.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHu1zxtqjsA - Check this out though, fairly recent (couple of years old)!

oohh wicked. that has a that touch that i'm looking for yeah. Thanks

Well this what i don't get, i guess it's all down to production. I would love it it if there was a little clan of people trying to capture, what now is an oldskool sound. I guess it's going to be hard for me to start the revolution. You just see it with every other music people using old skool vibes and techniques. Even it it wasn't taking seriosuly in the hardcore scene i'd been quite happy if it was sat in a little area with the electronica and breakcore scene. It would go down well at bang face!

I loved Sharkey's mix on Bonkers 4. A good blend of Trancecore and some harder stuff from the likes of Marc Smith. Happy was getting too cheesy at the time and the Dutch got too hard so it was 'Trancecore' or Freeform that led the late 90s imo

The problem is that the standard in technology has changed so much that it is pretty difficult to get the old sound back. Virtually no new producers own the technology required to get that sound and those that do aren't willing to use it. Trying to get the old sound with new technology just dosn't work, it dosn't sound good or authentic. If you like breakbeat Hardcore then check out Nefti, he is making pure class music that sounds 100% authentic. Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6D3QA3jNiPg&feature=related

And a whole mix here if you like it lol: http://www.nu-rave.com/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=26&topic=2407.0

The nefti tracks are wicked and absolutely capture the of old happy hardcore/oldskool hardcore. But i guess the trancecore sound is a little more specific.

Where did the term Freeform come from I've never heard of it. I think i can vaguely remember a compilation with the name.

Lol yeah i realised i went off topic somewhat lol but was worth mentioning anyway. No one is making the 90's Trancecore stuff, at all (that I'm aware of anyway), it was only a small few to begin with anyway really!

I don't know but it came about in the 2000's. Sounds much better than Trancecore imo!

gonna grab the nefti mix though. Like stepping back in time but into the future, weird.

Talking of the harder side. Is anyone into the stuff the likes of scorpio, producer and clarkee were playing back around 96/97?

I really like the more melody driven stuff a full speed. These are couple of faves. Quite a contrast track in comparison to some of the deathchant labels stuff. Maybe i'm crossing the boundary going into this territory.

Banging in my view.
