There is greater opportunity to expand it eg, adding a more advanced sound card etc should you need to, adding a second drive for backing-up your work (silly if you don't), and with all the leads connected to it will you really be moving it anyway?
Are you really planning to take it out with you.... and maybe drop it, lose it or have it stolen?
imo, a laptop is a fancy fashion item/ego massager.]

I might be taking it with me in the future because Im interested in forming a live P.A. set up. Would I need a laptop for that or is there another way for live stuff?

On the other hand it is vital that I make back up copies of my work and I want to get the most advanced sound card there is because I want my stuff sound crystal clear. Extra screen would make a detailed recording eazier with the fine eq levels. Im thinking on the basis of better sound a desk top might be better

[You can use the drum sounds from your MC307 directly via Midi and control the levels, velocity etc etc. You can sample each drum sound but that's a huge amount of unnecessary work.]

Im pleased to hear my 307 will work directly via MIDI, because the other way is very time consuming. Thats a relief.
I could probably even use the FX from the new Cubase software on the Drum sounds and to further liven up the sounds on my hardware synths.

As far as what CPU. The next computer upgrade for us will be a Mac with the latest intel CPU. Why a Mac? Buy it, plug it in and it works, reliably, solid as a rock.
If you choose a Mac it might be advisable to buy it from a Professional Music store as they'll be able to supply what you'll really need, with the facility to add/upgrade etc. An ordinary store won't really have a clue.

Yeah true to that. I know a good music store that Ive been going to for years. Im sure they'll be able to help me out. Ive heard some good feedback about Intel.
If a Mac is reliable as you say it is, it sounds like the way to go. But will it last me 10 years? You mentioned that your upgrading your computer. Is it expensive to do? How often do you have to do that? & What happens if you don't upgrade?

A laptop is ideal if you want to do live PAs but, imo, (if you can afford it of course) buy one specifically for that purpose otherwise you'll have all your eggs in one basket. Not wise.

The sound won't necessarily be any better on a desk top unless you have a really crap sound card in the lap top.

If you use the drum sounds on the MC307 you'll have to record them as an AIFF/WAV and then drop the sequence onto an Audio channel before using any FX from the computer.

It might be advisable to get other opinions before buying a Mac as there are a lot of people that hate Apple (for a variety of reasons) and will say that you're wasting your money and that you can 'build' a PC, taylor-made to your requirements, for less....
We don't subscribe to that point of view.
(If I intend to nail a lot of wood together I'd buy the best hammer for the job, I wouldn't 'build' one. A computer is nothing more than a tool, not an extension of your personality).

but, do a bit more research first, you never know, I could be wrong.

Will it last you 10 years? Yes, longer if it's not abused but unfortunately all things are upgraded from time to time, not just computers, so if having the latest software etc is essential (which in truth it isn't) you may be suckered into buying something 'better'.

We still use a 20 year old Amiga and an 18 year old Atari to get hold of our early tracks before re-mixing/improving them for re-release and a 10 year old Mac to recover other stuff that the newer system no-longer supports.

Good luck. :)
