I'd really like to know what trancecore is because on the one hand I have people saying that Eye Opener by Brisk and Trixxy, Bang - Sailaway etc. is trancecore (Which I don't really understand how) and other people saying that trancecore is similar to freeform (which I can understand). Anyone want to clear it up?
1999 was a wicked year! Mainly I guess because there was a lot of 1998 and 1997 stuff floating around in sets in 1999. for me it seemed like around 2001 was when happy hardcore was tailing off into far less imaginitive territories and it's almost like 2002-2004 was like a hardcore black hole where nothing really happened. Coincidently or not it was just as we started losing the happy from Happy Hardcore. But alas I was only 10/11 years old then so that's not an educated viewpoint, just me looking through tunes back then and seeing the direction; I can't tell you anything about the scene!

there are two "definitions"
1. trancecore is what freeform was called for a short period before it was finally dubbed freeform back in 1998.
2. trancecore being hardcore with trance influenced sounds (basically most hardcore between 99 and now)
(so is easy to see how confusion can occur, as for whoever was claiming eyeopener and sailaway were trancecore...well thats just stupid by either definition)
basically nobody uses the term anymore unless they are trying to sound clever.

Yeah that's what I was thinking but I remember reading reviews for Happy 2B Hardcore chapter 3 and a lot of people were calling it "trancecore" and saying that it wasn't happy hardcore anymore. The tracklist was wicked but it was like, proper 98 happy hardcore as far as I was concerned.

well those ppl are just plain stupid
that chapter only had 3 tracks at the most that can be considered trancier hardcore. you notice it more in chapter 5 and so on. i never really knew at the time that hardcore was near deaht atm since H2BH was the only series i knew of and they always contained the much happier more uplifting tracks, thank god.

Was a combination of things. The main thing was the popularity of Trance and Hard House which was very fresh at the time and everyone jumped on the bandwagon seeing the dollar signs to be made which took a lot of Hardcore producers from the scene. It did'nt only take producers from Hardcore though. Many ravers were probably hitting the over 18 mark at the time so started going to Trance or Hard House clubs instead of all age Hardcore raves.
Was a funny time to be into Hardcore. I remember going to record stores wanting to buy Hardcore Vinyl and kept getting told they don't get Hardcore any more. Then getting pushed to try to buy all these Hard House records. I told them if you order Hardcore, I'll buy from you otherwise forget it. Few months later I got a call from one of the store owners with all these Evolutions, Infinities and Next Gen limited records available for me. Was about one or two releases every couple of months after that.
But bad karma always bites back though. Hard House and Trance scene has shrunk a lot because of the House and Electro scenes. Don't think Tidy Tracks is even going anymore due to poor sales and many Hard Dance events actually have Hardcore rooms. A scene which tried to destroy Hardcore now relies on it's fans to get the numbers.
Electro and House influences seems to the future sound with Hardcore. Re-Con, Seduction, Gammer, Dougal and even Darren Styles are starting to produce tracks with Electro influences. But still keeping the Hardcore Element we love in their productions. The future is starting to look a little brighter as far as fresh sounds I think.

As one of the rare age 30+ people that are stilll into the music, i love 1999 hardcore but i don't think it killed the scene. I do think there was alot of people trying to call it down to death pretty much from 1995 onwards tho and the inevitable happened. I do think the loss of the happy element was a major part of it however.
It's also one of the reasons i go mad for any new tracks that bring back the old kick drum lead!
I think we lost a bit of the hard too along the way but i also love the new music in many ways also and i'm just glad the music made it and continued on. As long as there is hardcore i will buy the stuff i like and support it.

Because many people in America thought it was such a cool word and used it for everything.

yeah thats true actually. Trance left hardcore sitting on its ass. Hardcore had to reform and catch up and thats what it did.
