The hardcore scene from where I'm standing seems to be enveloping around freeform and more melody/breakbeat styles nowadays more than vocal sort of stuff. Of course, as HU4 revealed, some songs still sound great with some wicked lyrics, but I get the impression that freeform, varied sounds, 8bit and breaks are where producers are continuously favouring...
Or has it always been that way? Vocal tracks simply seems to be more on the commercal side of hardcore, but even Clubland Extreme featured some more freeform vocal-free tunes than normal.
What do people think?

Do people still care for vocal-based hardcore?
Yes, I most definitely do! It is, without doubt, my favourite kind of hardcore. I'd estimate that, out of my collection of 500 unmixed hardcore MP3s, at least four out of five are vocal tracks.
Don't get me wrong, there are some truly great non-vocal tracks (Ultravibes makes some awesome stuff, Dust, Accorbation etc), but one of the main lures of hardcore in the first place, for me, was the vocal aspect.
And I know what you mean - I do also have this sense that people might perceive vocal as more commercial.
Trying to think if I've noticed a big decrease in the number of vocal tracks. I guess there has been a gradual decline. There's certainly been a big rise in the number of tracks featuring male vocals.
My favourite tracks on Hardcore Underground 4 was 'Darren Hotchkiss & Stu Infinity - The Last Goodbye'. What a great vocal track that is? Gorgeous.
Dunno if I've answered anything there lol, just rambled on. Sorry.

Only the 90s stuff. The Darren Styles Clubland stuff is now out of the window.

some great points raised from above. notably the point about male vocals. when i wrote this thread, i had female vocals in mind. but its certainly safe to say male vocals are taking hold. people like himbo and stratton and many others have seen allot of success (in the sence their tracks are being played). as far as i can see, male vocalists have flourashed, proving that people do still like vocal tracks.
i dont think ive ever sang along to much stuff. i find myself humming melodies and repeating samples more than actually singing. the last track i sung aloud was 'where i stand' from hu4. i find myself humming 'insane' from alex bassjunkie pretty much all the time..

Never sing along?
I love singing along to hardcore tracks. Even the girly ones. You should hear my whispery, in-shower version of Squad-E's remix of Doesn't Matter. So cringing it's unreal. "...doesn't matter how, doesn't matter why....."
Acid, what's a favourite, recent vocal number of yours? Give me one male, and one female track.

if you read the topic I just posted about the trackitdown charts I believe they do.
We have a huge cheesy vocal track which is sitting at number 1 in the chart ;)

Hell yeah! I love my melody and sample based hardcore, but I like vocal tracks too. For instance, I'm currently listening to Darwin & Fracus feat Ant Johnson - Last Forever a lot, as I like the melody, lyrics and vocals. Both melodies and words can be powerful tools in music, and with vocals you combine them, so I don't see any reason why they should disappear.

Vocal tracks will always be there, but I think some producers cut back on the amount of vocals or eliminate them altogether from their tracks b/c too many ppl criticize it as calling the vocals too cheesy, or just shunning them altogether just b/c they're male vocals
i personally don't care with vocals or not just as long as they sound acceptable

Hmm for me it depends I would say. I used to be a fan of female vocals, but now I don't really like them anymore.. too many "ohh I love you, kiss me kiss me.."
I guess buy now I prefer male vocal tracks. Bello B, Stefan B, Cube::Hard, Andy L.
I love singing to tracks like Drifting Away or Setting Sun :)
But I also like tracks without vocals, or only with vocals shots/not too many vocals. And of course the monotone side of Hardcore, which is Frenchcore and Darkstep :) Same track 8 minutes long! untz untz untz

A lot of it has to do with costs and logistics.
It's hard enough finding a good vocalist, you also have to pay royalties, spend time recording, tuning, etc.
I'd do a lot more vocal tracks if I had easy access to a good vocalist.

Freeform and non-vocal tracks on Clubland X-treme Hardcore 6?! What tunes are u referring to? That's doesn't happen very often! I'm sure 90% of all the tunes on all the previous albums have some kind of a vocal in them.
