Good question, was thinking about it for ages. I guess you can but not directly. Like you won't re-remix a remix from Orbit1! It needs some years of difference perhaps!
But "Someday" from CeCeRogers for example. It's a song from 1987. Later, in 1992, there was a remix by Liquid, called "Sweet Harmony". Later again, Sy & Unknown remixed Liquid's remix. In 2003 Sy & Unknown Re-Remixed their remix from Liquid's remix from Someday. And not long time ago Danny Byrd remixed Liquid's remix. So I guess it's possible ;)

There are a lot of really badass remixes I would love to remix, but I wasn't sure if it was frowned upon or not. As for the year difference I agree. I think it would be a bit tasteless to remix a remix that was just released. It would have to be something classic or with at least a 5 year age difference. Thanks.

If you do a remix of, say, Shooting Star (Ham Mix)... Aren't you simply remixing Shooting Star?
I doubt an artist that remixes a song holds any rights to the remix pack (vocals, samples) he used himself, is that right?

i dont see why not - its not as though there is a rule book on remixing
if there WAS a rulebook on remixing, then i would say that half the songs in the charts at the moment would be banned -.-
friggin remixes of "white town - your woman", "olive - you're not alone" "nightcrawlers - push the feeling on" "Tina Moore - Never gonna let you go/RIP groove" "Imogen Heap - Hide and Seak"
and whats up with that peggy lee remix "get outa here, give me your money too" remix
i mean fair enough..remix it...but seriously all they have done is stick a beat behind her...and then loop her....and its in the charts....thats just cheeky.
but yea

has this ever been done before? And if you can remix a remix then maybe you could remix a remix of a remix?

Take the origonal heart of gold which has different sounding vocals from the kelly llorena version.
the remix on bonkers 9 was a remix of the kelly version (because of the vocals) hense a remix of a remix.

Wouldn't the Kelly Llorena version be a remake, not a remix.

sounds like it should. if you utilize the original vocals then it would be a remix, but if you are using totally different vocals i believe that is definitely a remake.
