Is it possible these could be put in place in the very near future?
- Linking to external avatars
- Allow animated avatars
And most importantly, fix it so that it doesn't treat 100x100 images as if they were oversize.
This is my avatar here:
This is what it should look like:
It obviously sized it down, even though it's below the limit.

Bad example, but it does size them down. It sizes it down to a quarter of the original. So allthough thats a bad example, it does matter. 3/4 of the bytes missing isnt a small thing.
...and agree, we shold get the gif's back.

I dont see anything wrong with yours. It would be nice to have a bit bigger file size limit on the avatars though!

Well I can certainly see it. The visible compression is especially bad around the letters. Bear in mind that this also effects other people's avatars (if they upload one that is 100x100, 100x99, 99x100. The system doesn't automatically compress avatars if they are 99x99 or less, yet the limit is 100x100).
