What synth actually creates that classic Hoover noize, its so quality.
Also what machine creates the Amen breaks. I tried recreating breaks by 100% sequencing but with poor outcome.

=) 'ardcore!

howdy,
heheh hoover... dont u just love D&B?? LOL
okies, first things first, with proper programming, most synths (or softsynths) can actually create this continuous drone.
the kind of oscilator and lfo speed used realy depends on whether u want that pitch drop or the distorted "dzzzzzzzzz" of a superfast lfo sent to the filter, or even back into the oscilator if ur lucky enough to own a JP8k and u want a metallic chainsaw thru sheetmetal sound (feedback oscilator fuggin insane.. muhahaha)

umm..
yeah
u can make heaps of different sounds, best way is to experiment, and when u find something u like, keep it. then start again. once u get flowing youll be making patches for days on end...

as for the amen style breaks.
Like ive said this in numerous forums, even thou i like the sounds and groove of the amen style (and the likes of funky drummer etc) if you have the equipment to make your own breaks, do it.
Dont just sample a loop which, although great, has already been overused.
You got nothin to lose by taking a gamble and using your imagination...
Youd be surprised how drum layering can sound...

As for the instrument used, dont laugh but its an acoustic drum kit.
Over the years of recording, sampling and re-recording, recycling etc, people have added verbs, compressions, limiters etc, so it can get alil hard to decipher.

but yeah, its a real acoustic drum :)

there are a couple of Junos...

however the best way to get a Hoover noise is to sample it and drop the pitch...

i dont know why i didnt think of it earlier... hell ive sampled a fart for a bassline... LMAO... Literally...
Ive also found car exhausts are good for this sort of droning sound.

cool!!

hey, you know what sounds mad.. when u have a good ripper fart happening, sample it, now raise the pitch abit and add some chorus.. create a nice clen zip sound.
okies, now detune it...
hehehehhee

sounds MAD!

ok im insane and got nothing better to do with bodily functions.. LOL

another trick is for people wanting to emulate that vynil noise...
if u dont ahve recod player, jsut stick ur smoke REAL close and suck ur smoke in. the sound is very similar to a record...

The Winstons - Amen Brother

as for the hoover its juno 2 but most are just sampled from old hardcore tracks from the early 90s. I have heaps of them.

umm.. actaully the JP8000 has some patches which come close,

its all in the detuning and the wide filter envelopes :)

"What synth actually creates that classic Hoover noize, its so quality."

It's the Roland Alpha Juno 1/2. It was a preset, although if you go buy one of these you might/ probably /won't get this sound cause all the prestets will be changed. But you might be able to find the original patches in Sysex somewhere.

"there are in fact three toys which make the hoover sound: the alpha juno 1
alpha juno 2 and the mks-50 which is the rack version alpha"

Any decent synth can make a Hoover, but they all sound different. And a lot of the Hoovers used in todays music actually don't come from the Juno's because of the fact that they sound different.

"you could try this link for more info on hoovers: http://kickme.to/hoovers"

That site has been down for a while, plus their tutorial on how to make a hoover was completely garbage. I really don't think those people ever tried to make a Hoover in their life.

"its all in the detuning and the wide filter envelopes (and) Roland Juno 2, although ive had no luck with mine"

The mistake most people make is trying to make a Hoover by using a filter envelope to actually sculpt the sound and it does not sound the same. Plus then the filter is less effective and sounds kinda funny.

NOTES: I'm at work right now and I'm just pulling this from memory and I haven't made a hoover in a long time. When I get home i'll check to make sure I didn't mess anything up or forget stuff (I don't think I did) and edit as neccessary.

Also, there's a whole lot of other modulation options you can use to play with the Hoover once you get it to make it more unique and stuff.

EDIT: Next post

Here's a basic tutorial on how to make a Hoover with a VA:

(This was done on an Access Virus. Parameters may vary slightly from VA to VA. Also, I'm gonna start throwing out numbers now, most synths have dial setting that go from 0 all the way left to 127 all the way right , if yours doesn't then try to approximate)

1) Get a pair of Saw Waves and detune them a lot to thicken up the patch. Play with the detune (I liked a setting of 110) untill you hear phase cancelation that sounds like it's Oscillating about 2-4 times a second. IE: Make sure it sounds a bit warbly. Like "whhaaawhhaaawhhaaa" every second or so.

2) Set up an ADSR envelope (I use my filter one and set my filter mod to -100%, but some synths just have extra ADSR envelopes) with a short attack (about 50), a medium Decay (about 70), a Sustain of 0, and Release doesn't matter.

3) Set your synth to use that ADSR envelope to modulate the Pitch of both Oscillators. Set the modulation amount to about positive 10.

4) Add Chorus (Mix 40,Intensity 127), Distortion (Type: Medium,Int 127), Delay, Unison Mode(X2), and bang on the keys and have fun!

What this does is create a big phase freaked sound that you are forcing to be pitch bent up and then down. And unlike using pitch bend on a sample, as it's creating the pitch bend the phase cancelation will kinda bug out and it creates all those neat harmonics that make a hoover a hoover.

-Soren

NOTES: The Oscillators in a VA are way weaker than a Analog synth. Instead of Square Wavs I just used Saws to thicken the sound up and make it rougher and I had to add distortion on top of that. But OK results overall.

All in all it took me about 2 minutes to make this sound and tweak it a bit. Here's the result:

(Right Click and select "Save As")

http://www.geocities.com/fyknight/SimpleVirusHoover.mp3

Keep in mind I didn't spend much time on it and there's a lot more you could do.

No, it's not 2 sawtooths detuned apart altho it makes the same kinda sound, it's actaully fast Pulse width modulation with a subosct (square) 2 octaves below and a chorus.

You do know there are probably shitloads of 17 year olds making Happyhardcore on their PC :o)

I know on Analogs you can use Squares and Pluse W to get the great sounding phase harmonics, but the Squares on a VA just don't sound the same, they are too accurate or something, so I had to use Saws and distortion instead. That's why at the end of my post I said: "The Oscillators in a VA are way weaker than a Analog synth. Instead of Square Wavs I just used Saws to thicken the sound up"

I originally wrote that for Analog using Squares, but when I got home I hopped on my VA and using Squares just sounds way too flat for a Hoover. And I don't have an Analog anymore, so i just rewrote it for VA's :)
