Germanys army got its initial military strenght from the occupied countries and consontration camps that made weapons. Winter War was before WW2 (the war broke in Europe in a WW degree in the 40's when the phoney war ended). Though Germany had air superiority throughout the war.
Also Germany never managed to conquer Soviet Union, and Soviet Union pushed them back to their side. Me thinks you've been listening too much of that "we saved Europe" stuff to realise that there were many fronts against Nazi Germany ;)

finish army wasnt that powerfu, just much smarter. i think in that particular battle they used ski's or something.
But im probably wrong, i learnt it at school ;-)
Wouldnt say smarter, just used everything they got (e.g. Molotov Coctail was "invented" in winter war, the name comes from Vyacheslav Molotov's statement that their not attacking Finland, eventhough they were bombing our cities. So Molotov Coctails werent weapons, we just offered them coctails ;)). Theres many similar stuff, but wiki covers most of the stuff http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_war#Hostilities Also, to keep this on topic... if there ever was one:

Alot of that was more to do with the fact they invaded in the winter months and were neither dressed, had the equipment or were prepared for the Russian winter.
Still you've got to be stupid if you don't realise RUSSIAN WINTER = TEH COLD and provides the Ruskies with a strategic favour.
BACK TO TEH PICS!!!1

That map shows about 10-20% of Soviet Unions landmass. They were near getting to moscow, but thats not the whole Soviet Union. If i remember right Axis tryed to get Soviets oil fields or something, which would have been deadly to Soviets military.

I think its the same in all countries. The further the country is the less you study its history :P
