Alright, this is for everyone to reply to, the new comers and the oldskoolers, but I would like to know what sort of equipment people work with these days. In short whats your studio like, and why is it to your liking. My studio setup consist souly of a computer for now, however I am in the process of building it piece by piece. So hows about it? Come on, now, dont be shy.

The hub of my studio is my puter. Its not that fast by todays standards, but it does the job without too much hassle. Its stuffed with 1GB RAM for samples and stuff. The soundcard is only an SB Live though....although I havn't had any problems with it.....but I am thinkng of upgrading to maybe one of the 24 bit cards.
Inside the puter I'm running Logic, along with a number of synths (Reaktor and FM7 being 2 of my faves).
Hardware wise I have an Akai S2000 which I tend to use for drums (although its a pants sampler and I shoulda spent a lil bit more for a different sampler)
Synth duties are taken up by a Yamaha CS1x which is an excellent synth for the money, although the analoguey sounds are lacking a bit in the bite department......I tend to use soft synths for those until I can afford a Novation Nova.
I've also got an old Yamaha Home Keyboard, which I only realy tend to use for its string sound and the kick drum.
All that goes through a Spirit Folio mixer.
Vocals etc come through a Rode NT1 mic, and a Joe Meek VC3Q straight into the puter, and a monitor mix is set up through the desk. I can stick effects on the monitor vocals using a behringer virtualiser, although this is only used for monitoring, as its hardly recording quality...all the effects are taken care of inside Logic.
I also have a couple of guitars and stomp boxes, a guitar amp (great for dirtying up breaks) and an amp simulator.
The only things I need to get are a decent monitoring set up (I'm still using my Hi-Fi.....but I know it so I don't have too much trouble - at least I don't think I do lol) and I would like an analogue style synth for some harder sounds.

I just started the epic building of my "playroom". Right now ive got my tables (two stanton 2500s) and my mixer (behringer dx500) run through a technics amplifier and that goes into my PC (sony vaio laptop, cant remember the memory or ram of the top of my head, but its pentium 3, shitty yamaha sound card though). I just got TIGHT new job dough, 11.50 and hour! full time, but its ground crew so itll be hard work but if my calculations are correct, ill probobly make close to 6,500 this summer. So im looking forward to next year

my gear list is up at:
http://www.djphosphor.com/studio_info.html Basicaly a pile of gear midi sequenced through Cubase 5 on a PC. Soon to add in Reason 2.0 to the setup (yeah .. softsynths ... mostly just for the Malstrom "graintable" synth .. fuxxin sweet!) and will probably be moving up to Cubase SX once it comes out and is stable. phosphor, have you tried the reason 2.0 beta?
malstrom can make some crazy stuff! :P
apart from that its very similar to 1.0

Lusive,
yeah ... i've played a bit with Reason 2.0 beta
and yeah, it's similar to Reason 1.0, but everything is tightened up. The 4 biggest additions (in my mind) are the addition of the Malstrom, the detachable sequencer, the new NN-XT Sampler, and ALL the LFO's now synch to the bpm of the track - very handy.
I'd really only be getting it for the Malstrom, since it's a slick "grain-table" synthesizer, and not as much of a pig as Reaktor ;)
Ideally (for me) i'd like a stand alone plugin version of just the Malstrom ;)

i'm sure thered be more powerful stuff thats standalone, i have connections in the audiosoftware scene and if i come across anything i'll let you know.
btw have you tried Native Instruments Absynth? i hear great things about it.. also NI's Kontakt (great VST sampler).

what my studio is like.. hehehe damn, half the shit i use i dont even knwo the name of.. LOL
i mainly use hardware, but i also use alot of software to fill the HW, tehn use more software to master what i make on the HW.. hehehe yeah its late, and im being silly.. ok heres a quick list.
HW
Yamaha RM1x
Yamaha 3kmkII (2gbhd + 128mbram)
Roland JP8k
Roland MC303 (great lil beat box)
Boss SP202
Peavey Midi Master 2 Processor/patchbay
Yamaha 12/4 desk
PC with SBlive
SW
Soundforge4.5 with 5 screens worth of plugs + vst adapter ;) (lets u play vst efects ina DX environment)
Orion2.75 + a million plugins and instruments
Logic 5 nice and tight
T-Racks mastering eq, compresor, limiter nice and warm
rebirth - still fat IMO
but a couple of synths i really love are Junglist, FM7 and Pro52
Orion is used as a notepad for chords and beats, as well as hosting VSTi's which i sample into the soundforge, f@ck with then port to the a3k.
The RM1x is an awsome sequencer and perfect for the kind of music i make.
once all my sounds and shit are right, i sometimes throw them into logic jsut to kill time, but mostly jsut stick with teh RM coz the sequence is usually fine..
once the track is finished, i use soundforge as a HD recorder.
Then i run the track thru afew different sound systems, and work out general track EQs and compressions to suit, which is where TRacks comes into play.
and thats about it.
oh sh!t, you didnt ask that question and i jsut rambled.. sorry... like i said its late... sleepy...
