On Saturday 26th May Quosh Records will be unleashing an awesome showcase upon Lakota in Bristol. Sy and Unknown have been one of the most formidable partnerships of the rave scene for some time. We tracked down the ever busy DJ Sy and put him under the spotlight and got him to answer some questions we thought, you would want to know, some serious and some just down right stupid, See what Sy had to say.....
OXYGEN) You have been coming to Bristol for various promoters for some years now. How have you seen the rave scene evolve in the city?
(DJ SY) Hasn’t really changed much at all, primarily because most of the gigs I’ve done have all been at Lakota – still going strong! Bristol has one of the busiest & healthiest rave scenes in the country.

At Oxygen on the 26th May, You and Unknown are presenting a Quosh Showcase using 4 decks and 4 mixers. What can we expect to see from you guys?
We’ll be busting all our new material, plus loads of Quosh classics, and of course plenty of scratching to boot ;-)

You seem to be a regular feature at Oxygen, playing some of the best sets we have seen. Have you noticed any changes in the way Oxygen put their events on?
I simply think the production & professionalism of each event has improved – for example, the set up for the djs is now fantastic, allowing us to really go to town on the crowd!

So, you’re in your car (some say at warp speed) headed towards Bristol and Oxygen, what do you expect when you get there?
Should be yet another packed & buzzing party!

If Oxygen booked you for a back to back set, who would be your ideal back to back DJ to play with?
DJ Unknown of course – oh look, that’s who I’m playing with this time!
What is it truly like to play your music to 1000’s of ravers, week in, week out?
Knackering ;-)
Your known to many as the “Scratch master”. When you 1st learnt to scratch, was it easy for you to learn?
Without wanting to sound cocky, yes it was really – I used to play the drums & have a good sense of rhythm, and playing the drums also necessitates good coordination – both vital ingredients for good scratching!
Oxygen have big plans for the future, do you see them making a success of things and if you had any advice for the promoters, what would it be?
Well their history so far has been great, so no doubt bigger & better things will come! The only advice would be to not be too greedy & rinse the scene – these kids have only limited money & simply can’t afford to go to tens of gigs each month. Space out the parties…!

What were the funniest, worst and best moments of your DJ career?
Funniest – probably my infamous roadtrip on Fireworks night with Terry Turbo & Chris Brown from United Dance, involving, amongst other shenanigans, various lit projectiles being discarded from the car at high speed into the path of other vehicles, shops, & people ;-)
Worst – being left stranded at an airport in a foreign country, no promoter there to meet me, his mobile not responding, etc etc
Best – too many – Fantazia @ Matchams Stadium, Bournemouth 1992 was wicked though! As was the last Slammin at the Sanctuary, Milton Keynes.
The rave scene as a whole has changed hugely over the past 10 years, how do you see it developing in the future?
Hasn’t changed much at all actually in 10 years I don’t think – in essence it’s exactly the same! And I think it’ll probably continue the same way. Basically ravers just wanna go out & let their hair down, jump around & sing along to fast uplifting music – exactly as they did 10 years ago!
There are so many new promoters out there trying to keep the scene alive and bread new talent, do you see this as a good thing or is there a risk of reaching a saturation point and not enough ravers to spread around the events?
I think we might be nearing that point this year already!
What has more bounce?
A) A rubber bouncy ball?

B) A Quosh showcase?
Do you really need to ask? ;-)
What scratches more?
A) A dog with fleas?

B) Sy, Unknown & Storm on a mission?
Come on guys, you can guess my answer to this! (A) ;)
If you got trapped in a lift, who would you like to be trapped with?
My missus of course! Ahhhhhh :)
If you could only take 1 hardcore tune to a dessert island, which one would it be?
I wouldn’t take a hardcore tune, I’d take a bloody speed boat so I could get the **** outta there!
If you were a cartoon character, which one would you like to be?
Tom from Tom & Jerry (that’s the only cartoon character I can ruddy think of ;)

Favourites?
Sport: Don’t mind a bit of one-day cricket

Music: Other than hardcore: Electro
TV show: Top Gear’s alright – not much else floats my boat at the moment

Food: Thai

Car: Audi RS4

Film: Heat

Make sure you don’t miss Sy, Unknown and Storm rip it up at Oxygen.
