As most of you have probably heard, DI.fm is in trouble thanks to RIAA and "The Copyright Royalty Board". Why?
"The Copyright Royalty Board in Washington, DC has more than tripled the royalty rates for webcasters and left unchanged they will kill Internet radio. These exorbitant rates go into effect on May 15 (retroactive to Jan 1, 2006!). Without Congressional action the majority of webcasters will go bankrupt and silent on this date."
- http://www.savenetradio.org/ Digitally Imported radio is based in the US, right? And Happyhardcore.com radio streams through DI.fm? So now my concern is, will we have HHC radio after 15th of May when the new rates will begin (read: DI goes bankrupt)? If you want to read more about it, here is a blog from DI Founder & Manager Ari Shohat: http://www.di.fm/blog/read/2007/03/new-music-royalty-rates-are-about-to.html I will go crazy if DI.fm and HHC.com will go silent!

This is something affecting Net Radio across the board! Already some of my favourite stations and close broadcasting friends have announced they are closing their doors. One person in particular is having to sell his house in order to meet the retroactive billing being put in place, which to my mind should be illegal! Its like buying a car for £10k, and then a year later saying, sorry mate, it should really be £15k
With Intense I'm sitting this one out to see what happens. 90% of the music industry that I have talked to are up in arms about this. Essentially it seems like a means to muscle the small time broadcasters out of business, and let the big boys take over as they have with terrestrial radio in the states. I'm sorry if any Americans take offense at this, its not meant against Americans in general, but the states is the most commercial-oriented country ever, I am seriously apalled at the tripe in the media over there. The last outpost of freedom in the media was the internet, and slowly that is being taken over by the corporations. An absolute piss-take!!!!
OK, rant over (for now)

DI are taking the same stance as me it appears. This is from Ari over on the DI forums:
quote: We have no plans to disappear however, and with everyone's help we'll fight till the last drop to remain online and legal and continue to provide the music for everyone. This has happened few years ago, the process comes back every new term. So been there before, and still kicking thanks to listeners.

While I'm not American, I'm going to watch the whole issue closely - and I hope the thousands of letters sent to congresspeople will work once again, as they did back in 2002.
And if you're a US citizen, go here...

Just sent mine to the congresspeople that represent this neck of the woods and sent the link to a similarly concerned friend of mine.
Too bad that Meph's got sent to Clinton, considering the chances she reads any email she gets are slim to none, and that fascist lover of all things restrictive of free expression is probably creaming her pants at the chance to shut down internet radio. (I don't like Mrs. Clinton, if you can guess.)

I have just received this from the powers that be up at Live365 HQ - this applies to all net stations, inlcuding hhc.com, so I shall just post it in its entireity
quote: On March 21st, I wrote you regarding the initial ruling by the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) announcing catastrophically high new royalty rates as well as a $500/year minimum per station. Despite the outcry of nearly all webcasters, the CRB denied the request for a rehearing and has proceeded with their original ruling.
In response to these new and unfair fees, Representative Jay Inslee (D-WA) introduced the Internet Radio Equality Act (HR 2060) on April 26th. This bill will provide immediate relief from the proposed new rates and can save thousands of Internet radio stations from going off the air.
Live365 and the other members of the SaveNetRadio Coalition fully support this proposal and are working diligently to see it turned into law. The next step is to line up cosponsors for HR 2060, but time is running short.
We ask that you IMMEDIATELY:
CALL your Representative and ask them to cosponsor HR 2060 -- the Internet Radio Equality Act. Click here to find your Representative's number.
NOTIFY -- YOUR LISTENERS, ARTISTS, and FRIENDS -- and have them call THEIR Representatives with the same request to cosponsor HR 2060.
We thank you again for all of the great support so far. Let's keep the momentum building into a crescendo that everyone can hear.
Sincerely,
Jason Stoddard
Director, Broadcasting

Leto raises a very good point but. Im sure many ppl here are not so morally rigid that they will not go in search of pirate stations, and what would be the effect on the genre when the sites that broadcast hardcore illegally suddenly become much more popular?

Seriously?
I dont think i've ever met anyone who wouldnt listen to a pirate radio station through any morals.
It's only a radio station playin records ffs, hardly killing babies.
Anyway mr underloop i wish you all the best with your station staying up, and especially to di.fm as there classic electronica channel has some of the best sets i've ever heard playing regularly. And when that channels shit theres always something on one of the channels worth hearing, normally too many to choose from.
One point if someone could clarify for me. Is this just a law for u.s based stations? Obviously its not this simple or they'd do it but why not move them to a different country, then they can still transmit all over the world anyway.
I no theres something more to it but i dont quite understand if someone could explain it to me.

I think he's trying to say that people will just go and listen to pirate stations... Just said it in a very garbled way ;)
