i know that a tracklist isn't allowed to be posted if it is unlicensed, but what are the legalities concerning posting mixes, as many of the tracks in mixes i don't have, so isn't it essentially the same as illegally downloading a song?

Basically, downloading mixes is illegal too.

It's because mixes don't include full tracks and are usually of a fairly low quality that we get away with it!

I think doing anything other than playing the music within your house is illegal unless you have a license for performing, thats as much as i know though

What a load of crap.

So if the people who signed that wrote a worldwide hit, they would take any of the money from licensing? Of course they would.

Not one I'll be sinig. Whilst I don't agree with some licensing restrictions, licensing definitely needs to be in place otherwise Mr Musicmaker doesn't get any bread put on his table.

This radio station (DI.fm) is fully licensed, but putting up mixes for download is illegal...technically.

My podcasts aren't illegal because they are literally recordings of a non-profit radio station here in Tennessee that has a full copyright license.

But yeah, it's not exactly the same as illegally downloading a song, but it has the same connotations...

Can chalk it up to a 'necessary evil' of the industry that gets turned a blind eye.

so would that mean that playin at a party is under the same copyright laws? i.e. the dj should hav the permission of the producer to play a track?

Depends on what they are playing from. Promo copies are fine, full release copies are not ok to play.

That info comes from items in my collection so might not be 100% accurate

public performance of any piece of music that isn't public domain is illegal w/o the license I believe. Hell wedding DJs buy licensing for their collections. However, most clubs/bars already pay into BMI/SOCAN/ASCAP to cover licensing, and it's up to the DJ to report what they play, how many people heard it, and how long it was on so proper payment is made. Otherwise it follows a scheme based on current popularity (ie, the money goes to top40 artists, older artists, etc.)

We have to remove them as you're not licensed to offer them for free to download but it's sort of the only way some DJ's can get their skills out there, so we remove the tracklist so that people don't download the mixes based on the tracklist (illegal download) and download it based on your DJ skills.

Put simply you make DJ mixes to show your DJ skills not to offer free downloads of the tracks :)
