Hello! Well, all those of you who know me, know how much of a numpty i am with computers, so here's my question;

I just bought a laptop, and a wireless router, i still have my other computer too, so the kids can play on it, but.........how do i get the both to be connected to the internet at the same time?

I have had conflicting information...some say you can only have one connection per line, others say you can have as many as you want as long as the 'main' computer is enabled to let you have others on there.

If anyone knows, please help. Just remember you talking to a numpty though and write your answer as explanatory as possible so i can do it....my kids are doing my head in! LOL

Thank you very much. ;-)

You most likely can connect 4-5 computers to the router. You should be able to use cable and wireless connections at the same time. IF you choose to set up a wireless connection, make sure its a secured line.

To connect the computers, just attach the cables from the computer to the router, the cable looks like that (It's called RJ-45):

All settings on windows (assuming you are using Windows XP) should be set to get all settings automatically, so no configuration required. If you are setting up a wireless network, its a bit more tricky. In that case i would suggest following the instructions on the manual.

The conflicting information is caused, cause some assumed you are connecting to the internet, through your other computer (for example business networks use this). But you can connect all computers to the router, which is connected to the internet ...so to speak.

Thank you! But yes, i do have a wireless connection to my laptop...this is connected by a little thing that goes in my usb at the side of my laptop. I have tried to get them both working at the same time but its not happening. I do have XP on them both, so can't understand it.

I also followed my user manual to the letter but to no avail. Do you think summat is wrong with my router or what? Someone said i have to configure my main computer to my laptop to allow it to connect through it so both have the connection.

You bought a new laptop which most likely has wlan, but you still connect it with a USB wlan? or it could be you are using a homePNA (i hate those). What router do you have? post the name and model so i know what you are trying to connect.

If this is a regular ADSL, you use wireless on both computers and the router is secured, then you have to configure the router to enable access from both computers.

The router is a belkin....dunno if that helps. I still have no idea what you mean and although i said the laptop is new, it is to me....but its a second hand one. I really do appreciate your help but i really am stupid when it comes to computers. I have been trying to do this for 2 weeks now and i am still none the wiser.

This is the only place i could think of to ask for help, so i appreciate any type of help.

Could you please though, put it as simple terms as possible....thank you. :-)

In Windows XP, from the Start Menu...click on My Network Places...click on Setup A Wireless Network For A Home Or Small Office...this will open up the Wireless Network Setup Wizard...follow the instructions

Well i would need to know the model number, as Belkin has various models.
Was the Desktop Computer connected to the internet before you bought the Laptop Computer? Is the Desktop Computer connected to the router, but you still cant access to the internet with it?

If you havent yet connected it, i need to know what type of router you have. Check the back of your router, are there slots for the cable i posted? It looks something like that (those 4 slots):

Use that cable to connect it.

Awww, thank you so much for your help...you're a star! (patient too) lol

To give you as much info as i can on the router (cos i don't know what you need) its an adsl modem with wireless-g router, it says also the 'G' is 802.11g and 54 mbps/2.4GHz wireless! Really hope that helps.

Then, yes the 'main' computer was internet enabled before i got my laptop, i tried plugging both the modem for the 'main' computer and the laptop into a double phone socket with 2 adsl things on. (dunno if thats right either). They just won't work together, only one or the other.

The picture you have shown me is more or less the same as mine...it does have 4 ethernet ports on the back, a reset button, a dsl line and obviously the power plug dooo darr!

Again i am sorry to be so stupid, just haven't got a clue when it comes to computers, but appreciate the time you are taking to help.

Thanks again :-)

•Plug your phoneline to the Belkin router (you most likely already have, heh).

•Plug the "Little USB Thing" on the side of your Laptop.

•Plug your old computer to the back of the router. I posted a picture of the cable you should use (you should have got one of those cables with the router).

I am not 100% how the router works, so if it doesnt work with that. Run the "Easy Install Wizard" Its in the Software CD that came with the router. Run it on both computers.

Make sure the wireless network you use with the Laptop is Secured, look into the User Manual for how to do this.

No problem, Belkin should have a 24 hour free tech support.

You don't need 1 connection per computer - You need to configure the router to connect to the internet and not the computer.

Install the wireless card make sure you have a "connected" light and that you have selected your wireless router in the wireless manager thingy.

On this computer:

Goto DOS
Start -> run -> cmd

type in "ipconfig" (without the ")

Get the number for the "default gateway" it will should look like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.11.1 or something like that.

Open your internet browser (IE or FF) put that number in the URL bar. If your succussful you should get a login / password prompt. Pull out your router manual and try to find the default login / password.

The next depends on what type of router you have and what type of internet connection you have (ADSL / cable modem etc) to how to configure it.
