i'm rather curious, and figure this'll be a good place to ask

i was looking through a bunch of decks, and dj packages and stuff on www.htfr.com ... and some are advretised as scratch packages, etc...

now... i've seen apparanty there are scratch slip matts, which makes sense to me...

what makes a scratching mixer???

(no experiance in the dj world, just heavy interest, and future plans)

A very smooth crossfader that has curve control. Most of the battle mixers have these standards.

out of curiosity

what does the curve control do?
and.. why would you want it specifically for scratching??

the curve control effects the rate the music is brought it, like how far over on the crossfader is what volume, when you're scratching you want the record to cut in and out really fast without much moving of the xfade, so you would want to curve control adjusted so taht it quickly reaches it's max volume.

Your average scratch mixer is also able to take quite a battering. The cross faders tend to be a lot more robust and longer wearing.

True. I used to go through about a fader a month on my standard mixer. At £15 a shot, it soon adds up.
Ive had my gemini umx 9 for over a year now and the fader's still going strong!!

In the words of Ali G: "Give a man a compilation tape and he'll dance for a night. Teach a man to scratch, and he'll be dancing for generations!"

well when scratching you move the fader up to 16 times if not more in your 4 beat bar. and how long does the scratching last? quite a while sometimes. then how often do you scratch? in the end the crossfader takes quite a bit of abuse

It's great to have an optical fader, they are made not to wear. I have a Stanton SK-2F which I scratch the crap out of. No, I know what you're thinking, there isn't any crap in my mixer.

PANTS!!!
