To what extent do you think you can really know someone, by only having ever spoken to them online.......?

You NEVER actually KNOW someone....just think you do! Never met anyone that is an exception to this rule. Worse to actually judge when online though, cos you don't see a facial response, just a worded one and its not always possible to read it right....i have that problem all the time (but then, i'm a little stupid).

I think you can know people well. I can always grasp the essence of someone's personality if i have been talking to them for a reasonable ammount of time. I've met alot of people from the net, within the Hardcore community, and alot of these people are now my best freinds. For all those people i would have said i knew them well before i met them, and meeting them in person prooved me right about that.
So assuming that everyone is being honest i think you can know people essentially online as well as it's possible to know anyone in person (the key word here is 'essentialy'). There is always going to be small details you can't pick up on, or that take a long time to pick up on, but those aren't really relevant since they aren't the defining points of the person.
I think you just need to use your common sense :)

But couples get together through the internet etc all the time there must be some clue as to what they're like beforehand
Also don't most people speak in a completely different way to how they would in a face to face situation & say different things?

Well that's the thing, if people do do that then it gets confusing, but i don't know anyone who does that, and i know i never would. I don't understand why anyone would speak differently in text than face to face. I'm not talking any differently now than i would if i was talking to you in person, and i'm pretty sure it's the same for you too.

Yeah it is, but I don't doubt that some people have an increased amount of confidence by being able to "hide behind text" as it were.

Depends who it is tbh. Some people come over as someone that they are not. They set out to become a different person for whatever reason. You meet them and they seem like the same person, then over time cracks start to show and you start to see the real them.
Then some people are totally genuine, and exactly what they seem like online - complete headcases ;-)

It's a tricky subject.
As has been said before, alot of people pretend to be somthing they're not. I've lost count of the amount of times I've had people having a go at me because they think it's cool or or they're tough on the worldwide interweb.
I've met only two people in real life who I've known from the interworld, and they've both been more than fantastic.
I think for anyone with a tiny bit of comman sense can spot who is a fraud and who isn't on the net. I know alot of people online that I've never met in person but would still call a friend of mine.
The problem with te internet is that it's faceless, and for the best part it's only words, and words can mean anything you want them to in your own head. Quite often it's not what the person who wrote it intended it to mean.

Most people are a bit different than you imagine them, whether thats them acting different online or you just taking them in the wrong way.
Also is different if you've just seen posts on here for example we just mainly talk about music, but if your on msn or whatever you find out a lot more about them and chat more about normal day by day stuff.
Like with myself most people say i'm quite different to they imagined, cos on here were talkin music so i'm mostly moaning or arguing  . But in general im quite easy going with things and just wanna have a laugh with folks, just like gettin a discussion on here.
I've met some people i thought were gonna be annoyin as f*ck who turned out to be hilarious and are good mates, people i thought would be quite loud then were quiet when i met them and loadsa other things. So its not always in a bad way when people are different to you imagined.
Even if you meet people anywhere like the internet or the pub or work or wherever, you can think you no someone then see a totally different side.
But aye agree with Mortis about the faceless point, things are open to being misinterpreted by how you read them.

I'm a salesperson and my job is to sell! but I have a gift in that I can see someone and judgethemt in 10 seconds!(no training or these 6 week courses that people go on) its just I know people from every imaginal background through my life and my work! Online is different because you can pause at everthing that is said! and then put your point across! in your own time!

Firstly....i corrected your spellings :-p Secondly, i think you can get a grasp of what people are like when talking over the net, even though you can call them a friend before you meet, it takes the meeting to actually secure the friendship. Thirdly, when are we meeting Matt? ;-)
