A tiny sausage dog could be put down after being accused of nipping a neighbour's ankle.

Lucy, a 20cm (8in) high black-and-tan dachshund, is facing destruction under the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Owner Melanie Hobson insisted the claims are ridiculous. The mother-of-two said: 'I can't believe this is happening. Lucy is tiny, how can she be classed as a dangerous dog?'

The 25-year-old, from Gosforth, Newcastle, has pleaded not guilty to having a dog dangerously out of control in a public place on October 9.

She added: "You only have to look at her, she's tiny, how can she be classed as a dangerous dog?

"I just can't emphasise enough how tiny she is.

"The kids adore Lucy and drag her all over the place.

"She's kind and gentle with them and incredibly patient."

Mrs Hobson said the family were out shopping on the day of the alleged attack, in October last year, and she was carrying bags into the house with the children running in front.

She added: "Next thing I know our neighbour is accusing Lucy of biting him on the ankle.

"She's never done anything like that before."

A week later Northumbria Police officers arrived at the house to take a statement.

Mrs Hobson said: "When they saw how big Lucy was you could see in their faces they thought 'what are we doing here?'

"I thought that would be the end of it but then I got the court summons and I was absolutely petrified.

"It was awful, I'm not a criminal."

But if magistrates in the city find her guilty of the offence, they could order that Lucy be destroyed.

My reaction?

It's the tiny dogs that are the worst.

I'd rather have a giant, slavering, beast of a dog savage me to death than a little ankle biting shit snapping at my ankles.

its started croppin up alot in the papers n on the news about dogs attackin people ant it? i dunno y its started now surely dogs have bin attackin people 4 ages but thers bin loads in the media recently. seems 2 me like theyre tryin 2 get sumthin done. i can understand puttin a dog down if its a massive rottweiler (which r usually quite friendly) maulin a 2-year-old 2 death but an 8 inch sausage dog nippin sum1s ankles, thats jus bloody stupid.

but it is the tiny dogs that r the worst and its more embarassin. try tellin ur m8s uv jus been savaged by a jack russel, theyll laugh their bollocks off.

LOL this really does take the biscuit!

We have a Dachshund (a mini wire). In fact we used to breed them! There is no way on this earth they could be classed as a dangerous breed! They are the biggest cowards out!!!!

Oh sure they act all hard and "man about the house"ish, but as soon as a stranger would come in to the house he would hide under the table and bark!

The only time I have ever seen a dachshund turn on anybody is when provoked. Either by accident or not. They are incredibly loyal dogs and would die to protect you, but only if they HAVE to!

Oh, and to give you an idea of the size, heres me with our 2. The black and tan one isn't with us anymore unfortunately.
