What makes you so sure? Believe me, it can be done without FM.

^I programmed these for a thread on another forum.
The 2nd one is a donk programmed on Cronox 3, no FM used.

*I* programmed it....... no samples involved whatsoever. 1 analogue-modelled oscillator, 1 analogue-modelled filter.

well guess what MR IGNORANT. you're wrong, i don't mean to sound big headed and sorry if this comes out eloquently. BUT, it IS an FM sound. I own a yamaha DX100.

if you think it's just a square wave with a shortdecay envelope set to the filter cutoff, you are so wrong, might sound simular but very wrong.

it's all sinewaves, 1 sinewave 1 octave above another sinewave, the FM index is quite high, and then the FM amplitude has to be set to a short'ish decay. I'm so good at making this sound on the DX100 i even made it first on the native instruments FM7 like 100 years ago.

i made it 101 years ago on native instruments fm7 and it sounds twice as good as yours does

You came back the second you made that post though, lol. Anyway he said FM is not the only way. Where software filters are concerned i can't see it being done but with an analogue filter it's definately possible.
