any general advice for pretty much a person who knows next to nothing about producing ??

I would say to try and get some software and try it out b4 you buy Hardware. Like Cubase, Cakewalk, or Reason (if you have a friend with them they are ummm... really cheap ;). Then if you like it get a sampler and a synth.
For synth get a Novation Nova or Supernova (Or Access Virus if you can find one). And for sampler either a Yamaha A3000,A4000,A5000 or an EMU Ultra (either the 6400 or 4XT depending on budget).
That's my advice, but I haven't produced anything so I don't know how much it's worth :) I do have friends that produce and I have asked a ton of questions on boards and stuff and those are the answers I get most of the time for advice on getting started ^_^

http://www.nuenergy.co.uk/safensound has a pile of decent info on both MIDI and Audio production (thx to Sharkey and K-Komplex ;) As far as i'm concerned Soren is bang on with what he's saying. Start with software, even try a tracker program (Fruityloops is damn good, also Mod Plug, FastTracker, or Impulse Tracker) - i started out as a FastTracker ho ;) Start cheap .. figure out what you want for yer sound .. and what genere you'll stick to ... cause that will determine alot of the gear you get .. For gear a sampler is essential ... I have a yamaha A3000..it's decent ..my next one ... and there will be a second one .. will be an EMU i'm certain .. The Supernova is a beautiful peice of gear... the Nord Modular is another of my fave's (better than the Nord Lead i feel - more diverse). If you can grab some older analoguish gear .. like a roland Juno106 or and Alpha 2 .. just to get that phat dirty bass they put out. the Roland JV series is also quite good for all yer basic wav-table synth sounds ... (pianos, strings, etc ) A couple other good gear lists are Scott Browns: http://www.evolutionrecords.co.uk/studio.htm and Next Gen's: http://www.nextgenerationrecords.co.uk/studio.html and ya .. mine .. http://bounce.to/phosphor Cheerz! Wow!! Thanx again Phosphor!!! Those links are cool!! Mmmmm.... Scott Browns Studio...... wwwaaahhhaarrrr.....
Hmmm... I just looked at your studio also. Cool!!! But now me has some questions. I have been waiting to get a Virus Indigo for about 6 months now and I don't think I will get it any time soon. Should I keep my money there you think? Or should I just give in and get a Supernova II Rack? Also I noticed like many ppl you have a Juno 106 and other synths. Do you consider the Juno 106 to be neccessary? Can you emulate the sounds of a Juno with a Supernova or Virus, or is it completely unique? Also I heard that Novation came out with a new patch that allows you to automatically add more detuned voices to a patch making it much phatter, is that true? I know this is already an option on the Virus. If it is true does it add a lot to the Novation products? DOes it work good? Thanks!!! Sorry so many questions ^_^

I'd like to get a ruling on wether it's ok to post warez links before I put anything up. Silver??? But i'm pretty sure if you can't post MP3 links you can't post warez links either ^_^

I have also lot of questions but they will come later :)
Here are some usefull links:
http://www.vintagesynth.com - If you are looking for information about a synth.. here you can find it. You can also hear sounds and maybe see the manual http://www.futureproducers.com - Special forums about samplers, home studios, synths etc. And also reviews and tutorials about hardware and software ------------- * Ok gabbers from Italy and Holland, it's time for a ******* war, so join the army of hardcore and clap your hands to this * Edited by - Sander on 18 Apr 2001 11:36:54

Little bit off topic but I'm proberly buying my first synth, the roland juno 106
What is the price of a used juno 106? I think about 300 dollars?
Tomorrow I will call for the price but first I want to be sure

Unless it's in super awesome condition I wouldn't pay more than $400 for a Juno 106. I have seen them go for anywhere from $300-$600. The average price off one site that has logged about 40 Juno 106 sales is $414.
And Skyler I will email you when I get home from work in about 7 hours ^_^

Thanx Soren!
I've called the shop and the price they ask is $450. But he said it was in a very good edition (only a little bit dust ;) and if I buy I also have some guarantee. Before I called 400 was my limit but I think I will do it. I have seen them cheaper but this is a shop, and I trust them more then a regular person
