Not right at all.

Happy hardcore is a sub genre of HARDCORE as is Freeform and Breakbeat hardcore.

Hardcore is the actual genre that ALL the hardcore sub genres stem from... Unsurprisingly : P

Was just about to say it

errr not right at all, and is the typical answer of a lifetime happy hardcore fan.

it has always been "Happy Hardcore" and will always be "Happy Hardcore". for some reason around 2000 when the scene went quiet and the music not as cheesy the scene was restarted (obviously). some buff decided that they didnt like the happy term and so stopped using it, others followed and now we've got a problem. "Hardcore" is the true word for Gabber and has been for much longer than Happy.

Take Hard House for example, a few years ago it went really quiet and became really trancy. Its like the Hard House lot deciding to rename it Hard Trance. You cant do it because the name's already taken

I mean in a sense you could argue that Freeform and Breakbeat are no longer sub-genre but their own genres. OK most Freeform is still within hardcore boundries but stuff like the Finnish stuff is more like NRG but with a much higher tempo. Breakbeat is increasingly becoming more complex and sounding more like DnB. Artists such as Concord Dawn and John B within DnB tend to be making music sounding more like Hardcore Breakbeat. They're all mashing together and yet too many people refuse to acknowlege this fact.

OK perhaps I'm wrong about the "Upfront" bit but there are still three and they're drifting apart daily.

and im sorry but that's utter bollocks.

Softcore? OK name me one tune you'd class as Softcore.

Rapcore? If you were to do that then effectively you'd have every genre under this new pidgeon hole but only the tracks with rap samples in. Youd have fatboy slim, scott brown, endymion, lisa pin-up etc etc. What about the ones with film samples, you gonna call that Moviecore?

What is DJApollyon talking about? happyhardcore was a name given out to all the new cheesy stuff coming out in 96 (toytown, steamtrain ect) b4 then it was always called Hardcore! Can someone tell me what tracks today are classed as happyhardcore? The name has just stuck! The music we listen to today is HARDCORE! not HAPPYHARDCORE!

You are wrong, there are several diffrent type of Hardcore genres, from several countrys. Gabbers like to call it true Hardcore and whatnot, but it has no base in reality. The Gabber fans often have no idea of Happy Hardcore, since they've only been exposed to the very mainstream stuff from the mid 90's. Also there is no such genre as Softcore, its a porn genre.

jenks, i wouldnt consider J-core a genre. I often use the word Japanese Hardcore or JHardcore, but i refer to stuff from a certain country, not subgenre.

Moviecore? What a great idear!

Softcore= Every track on Clubland Extream Hardcore 1, which is said to be the most badly rated 'Hardcore' CD that came out last year... The track 'Love Garden on Hixxy's mix, Bonkers 15 is quite 'Softcore' as nobody seems to call it Hardcore

I have to disagree with you there. People who originated hardcore, called it hardcore because it was harder and faster than anything else out. And surprisingly, the stuff on Clubland Xtreme is still harder and faster than let's say house or trance. Also, as when some real cheese was released they called it happy hardcore. I enjoyed CX too...maybe it was just me. It had some real tunes on there. A little too slow though, but I can deal with that.
What whispering said hit the point too.
