Hi everyone, DJs, MCs and of course all the ravers. This is a long message, but I need to say how I feel.

I'm new to this scene and going to my first hardcore night this weekend. I'm hoping to have a great time.

Winter 2001 - four years ago. I'd heard nothing for ages, but the same radio junk stuffed down my ears and was getting sick of it. I was also getting bored of the drum'n'bass parties being held locally. The atmosphere was always too dark and moody for my liking. I thought to myself, what happened to the decent dance music that was out when I was a little kid? 1986 - 1996 era. Of course, back in those days I was far too young to fully appreciate Baby D, Prodigy and SL2, but I enjoyed them nonetheless. I went out in search of some oldskool ravers and was going to go raving with them at the tender age of 15. In the end I decided against it as it was a dodgy arrangement. I just stuck to buying lots of oldskool compilations and enjoying them through my stereo.

Over the next three years or so my passion for dance music really developed. I got pulled into a different scene and got into hip hop. The hip hop heads told me that their scene was so much more productive and positive. I believed them. Now, I would have always liked to fuse hip hop and dance/rave music together, but this never went down very well in the hip hop circles. To them raving and dance music just isn't "rude" enough. In their eyes it's much better to go out and mug some innocent bystander, use their money to buy crack and take things from there. That sounds positive and constructive doesn't it? This didn't appeal to me and isn't what true hip hop is about anyway. Don't get me wrong the good people in the hip hop scene have taught me a lot, but they are few and far between. Instead there are far too many idiots who want to be gangster or just want the image. I found myself in competition with these jerks and that was never what I got into hip hop for. All the crap that goes on is ridiculous. It does not inspire me.

Over the last 6 months in particular, the hip hop scene and all the wackness involved with it has got me down so much and made me really unhappy. Its not what I got in it for. I was invited to Slammin' Vinyl Westfest 2005 last month, but wasn't sure so stupidly... I didn't go. I listened in on the radio...

What can I say? I'd heard of a lot of stuff but never realised how much the rave scene had progressed. My head has been so stuck in all the crap, in the hip hop scene and I've been so busy stressing, trying to help them all out that I've been completely blind to all the quality happening in this hardcore scene. I was mad impressed by everything I heard over the radio on Slammin' Vinyl night. Good quality mixes and the MCs were holding it down. It was also nice to hear the award ceremonies and the vibe sounded amazing. It was positive. I am still kicking myself for not going.

I know that in every scene there are good and bad points, but compared to the state of so-called hip hop at the moment, the hardcore scene is actually decent. I'm only 19 years old so very young, but I feel I have a lot of good things to bring to this scene, which seems to be already going places big style. I've already got a few ideas that I would like to work on in this scene and I've always fancied a proper go at producing music, so watch this space.

I'm really looking foward to getting more involved and meeting the people on the hardcore scene. So far, what I've heard and seen has really inspired me. I got into hip hop because I was looking for inspiration. Sadly its let me down badly. I hope the hardcore scene can help me out better. I know I have a lot good stuff to bring and a lot of energy I want to give. All I need is the right scene and the right place to do it...

Peace.

CJ

Welcome to the site CJ! Guessing you heard about this site from the awards :)

I completely agree with you about this scene. It really has progressed even though some people still think in the wrong way.
Although ive never been to an event as big as slammin's (lucky british bastards ^.^), I always hear its amazing.

Its kinda refreshing seeing new people talking positive about the current scene for once
and good to hear you wanna contribute, I try my best to open people up to hardcore here in so. california but im no salesman.

The music has inspired me alot and im sure you will be too. There are plenty of knowledgable members here so im sure you can get answers to any questions you have.

Oh and welcome back to the scene :)

Aye we get a lotta good parties goin on around here, where abouts in uk are you from i'm sure someone'll be able to help you with local events.

I'm not big into slammin vinyl myself jus kinda never feel it's worth the effort but if you like big events it's definitely something to check out, jus go to parties and find what ones you like and stick with them while tryin out new things that pop up.

As far as production goes i'm only just startin so not much help there but is a lot to learn and it's all fun, hope you enjoy ravin and the mates you meet through it anyway.

I'm in a similar situation, 19 and new to the 'scene'. Problem is what do you do if every single person you know thinks hardcore music is rubbish part from yourself.

Also what sucks even more is that I'm at durham uni now, and all the private & boarding school nobs in halls think that 'Insomnia' is hardcore. I'm startin to get sick of summer of '69 bein played at all the clubs and I need to go to a proper rave or event or anythin remotely hardcore.

Anyone have any ideas?

Yup that's what people around here have been thinking, just because it's a classic dance song they accept it as rebelious and hardcore somehow.
And as to you're problem mate, who else should say what kind of music you should like? Don't follow the sheep (which you haven't) and run naked! Not really pal, but Franz Ferdinand or Scott Brown you choose!

I live in the south-west very near to the Bath and West Showground where they held the Slammin' Vinyl Hardcore Heaven Awards. I've heard that they will probably hold it again there next year so I'm not missing that for the world.

I'm sorted when it comes to finding local events. My crew are training me up good.

Well my first hardcore night had its good and bad points just as I expected.

It was only a very small event and very low key. If that's what the small events are like then I can't wait for the real deal, big events with the big names. Bring it on.

Music was awesome. Vibe was quite good. Sound system was very weak though and the MCs were strangely silent no matter how loud they screamed down the microphone the music was too overpowering for the size of the room and the MCs couldn't be heard. Shame really, because that would have made it so much better.

On the whole though it was a wicked night. I danced non-stop for a good five hours. Loved it.

Big up my crew and the pole dancer who was a good laugh.

But you were there! (I just didn't see you)

CJ - SV was not brilliant this year. I was disappointed as were hundreds of people who complained to Slammin about various things (see their forum) Unless I hear good things about NYE at the NEC I won't be back at the showground next year which is a shame as I really enjoyed the other two times I went there.

If you are near the showground I would check out events in Bristol or even come down to Bournemouth as we are having Hardcore Heaven on the 9th Dec at the Opera House and that always goes down well

Anno wouldve loved to meet you aswell, can jus tell from how you are on here would be wkd laff

Not trying to put anyone off slammin as its a great experience i just aint much into big hardcore raves anymore, probably just me but it doent have the same atmosphere as before. Still love my wee raves and of course the legendary raindance so will still be rockin hardcore for a gd bit longer and up for meetin folks off here , gonna see wee stony mctony next week for rave up if anyone remembers him am chuffed with that cos he's crackin lad. Just music and atmosphere wise gabba/hardstyle/oldschool have been doin it for me much more recently, like some upfront style but only the smaller raves seem to have the people i like to rave with.

Anyway mate bristols got plenty gd hardcore of all kinds for you to try so check events on ush/dontstayin and those kinda places you'll be fine. The scenes not 100% perfect like some people dream it is, but you'll get a lotta the best nights out and mates for life if you stick at it.

Welcome to the site

You wanted to fuse hip hope and rave together? I think that's how hardcore began with hip hop breakbeats mixed with house in the late eighties so you have some apreciation. Any have fun at the raves

I will definately check out Bristol and Bournemouth at some point.

Yes, I wanted to fuse hip hop and rave together, especially a lot of the original breakbeats. My involvement and knowledge from the hip hop scene are things and experiences that I would like to make use of in the hardcore scene.

Hip hop got me doing artistic things and expressing myself, but I think deep down I always knew, that my heart was in dancing and rave music, ever since I picked up my first oldskool compilation back in 2001.

I'm not going to read more into it than necessary but maybe I was meant to stumble upon hardcore in this way... Anyway, I don't care. At the moment I'm having the most fun that I've had this year.

I'm really getting into the hardcore scene more and more at the moment which is great. I think it's time to start putting something good into this scene. As I said before I would like to try my hand at music production. Perhaps with christmas money I could purchase a decent computer and the software to get me started.

I've also recently had a lot of my faith restored in the hip hop scene. Sharing my ideas and feelings with likeminded people really helped, especially when some of the older heads said they understood how I felt and why it was bringing me down. All the same wackness still goes on, but at least I've found people who I can relate to and keep me inspired to carry on with my work.

I will upload some of my work soon so you can all check it out and give some feedback.

Time to blend it all together and keep things positive.

CJ
