Please introduce yourself and talk briefly of your involvement in the hardcore scene:
Hello my name is Marc….., I’m Sagittarius, which means I’m half man and half horse, so have a license to shit in the street, seeking companionship …..Oops sorry wrong questionnaire:-p

I’m Marc Smith and have been djing and producing professionally for the last 17 and 12 years respectively and have been involved in the hardcore movement since it conception.

How long have you been playing at Vibealite events?

If my memory serves me correctly……and hey it defo aint what its used to be, but my very first Vibealite booking was back in the early day’s of vibealite in 1994 @ Venue 44 in Mansfield, ****ing loved that venue too …awesome….some real good times, and I’ve been playing for them on a regular basis ever since.

What do Vibealite events mean to you?

Well as a dj I’ve practically been brought up playing @ Vibealite party’s, so they mean a huge amount to me, the whole ethos behind them is they just want everyone to have a wicked night, and that is apparent at every single party they throw without a doubt, whether they’re making or losing money, their attitude has never changed after all these years, and they’ve always been huge on production, some of the set ups I’ve seen there over the years have been simply astounding.

With the forthcoming ‘Triple Crescendo’ events soon to take place, with 3 hour sets for some DJs and 90 min sets for all ‘new talent’ DJs, is this a step in the right direction for hardcore?

Well ……I think anything that further pushes the boundaries of hardcore and continually challenges our scene, helps to keep it growing and evolving and this has got to be a good thing, keeps it fresh and interesting…. and this concept is certainly interesting.
Vibealite have taken the bull by the horns here…….and are giving him a damn good ****ing shake lol. No one knows yet if it’s a step in the right or the wrong direction, but……it’s a step in a new direction, , so massive respects to them for that.

Seeing that most hardcore sets are an hour or even a measly 45 minutes, Why do you think you have been chosen to play a 3 hour set? Are you looking forward to a longer set?

Easy….Coz they’re stupid enough to keep booking me….. and I’m daft enough to want to play for 3 hours haha and yeah I can’t wait, thinks it’s a wicked idea, just need to make sure theres a toilet near the dj box :-O

A 3 hour hardcore set is a mammoth task in terms of variety. Will you be planning your set or are you hoping to follow what the crowd wants? How important is it to read a crowd and do you think your ability to read a crowd has resulted in a booking for these Vibealite events?

It’s only really a mammoth task if you limit your music selection, the hardest part is really going to be keeping ravers interested for 3 hours. Especially as they’re only used to hearing a dj play for an hour tops and mostly one style of hardcore within that hour. As for planning the set….no definitely not!! Not my style. I have a good idea of the stuff that I wanna play, and the stuff that I’m absolutely going to play, but in the end, most of that will be dictated by the crowd. It’s vitally important for any dj to read the crowd, most dj’s to an extent will play what they want…..but only to an extent, the rest of our job is knowing what to play and more importantly when to play it, and by watching to floor, the crowd will tell you this….Always!

How will your set differ at the ‘Triple Crescendo’ events? Will it be all brand new material, old classics or a mixture of the two? Anything special planned?

I think on this first occasion, I’m definitely going to play a mixture of all types of hardcore….old and new, happy and hard to stomping and uplifting, hell….. there may even be a bit of cheese thrown in who knows haha. I play a lot of old school sets here and there and lots of upfront sets every weekend but,, over the years I’ve played all types of hardcore, and its not often I get the chance to mix them all up in the one set, so I’m really looking forward to being able to do that for a change, It really is a quite a unique concept that vibealite are pushing here and one I think a lot of dj’s and ravers will embrace. As for anything special…..wait n see lol

Will you just be playing hardcore in your sets or are you hoping to play something a bit different? A few of the DJs booked for these events are known to make/play other styles of music, do you think other styles will go down well with a hardcore crowd?

Well I know other styles already go down with ravers, from doing the Force 9 b2b thing I do with my hardtrance partner Jay m @ main room hardcore events, vibealite already being one of them, and the hardcore heads loved it, but I think for the first “ Triple Crescendo”, I’m gonna keep it hardcore…..but we’ll see.

If you could, would you play longer sets all the time? Why have promoters not been keen to do this before?

I think I’d be happy to do a bit of both to be honest, again it keeps it interesting doesn’t it and keeps a dj on his toes lol.

Because of the pace of hardcore, a lot of sceptics have said that a 3 hour hardcore set would bore ravers. What do you think?

To be fair, I think there is a massive amount of variety in our scene right now! Only difference is, that you have to go and listen to lots of different dj’s to hear the lots of different styles. I think this Triple Crescendo idea gives dj’s the chance to show how versatile some of them can really be, and how much variety they can fit in when they have 3 hours to play with.

Finally, if you could hear any DJ, old or new, dead or alive, play a 3 hour set, who would it be and why?

That’s too easy………Jimmy Savile of course hahah!!
Aw man if I was to pick only one, it would have to be my old favourite Carl cox….without a doubt!! And I know its nothing new to hear Carl Cox play 3 hour sets, but to hear him play a 3 hour old school hardcore set dropping some of them old classics that he used to on three decks…….I would just cream my ****ing pants……..twice. Having been around as a dj and raver for shall we say …erm , quite a few years, I’ve had the privilege of hearing Carl play out many times over the years, and when he was playing hardcore….no one could touch him.

We've got interviews with Scorpio & Producer + Stu Allan coming over the next few days.

We'll also be posting up an interview with Gary the promotor of Vibealite.
