alrighty, ive been up all night, continueing work on a laptop ive been fixing...for 20 hours straight..

and as my mind was wondering on one of my breaks..i thought of a movie i saw when i was a kid

i think it was called "Spacepod"

there main craft explodes, and the...5 or 6 people are left drifing in space for the entire film! slowly they each fall victim to some wierd virus..

so yeah, according to imdb, it wasnt called spacepod, and theres another film that was released around 2004 thats called "Spacepod"

so, anyone else seen it? able to shed light on my mystery movie?

cheers

also, does anyone remember seeing Flight of the navigator as a kid hehe

flight of the navigator! haha blast from the past, we all used to obsessed with that film, mite have to track it down soon. Sorry cant help u on the space pod movie but does anyone remember that film about a load of space dudes who go somewhere and theres these strange things which look like huge woodlice and crawl into your brain and make you go crazy, pretty sketchy details there but ive always wondered what the name of that film was

Theres nothing wrong with the boat those big holes help keep our feet cool.

That sounds like Star Trek 2 - The Wrath of Khan.

Or was that 3.... time to start imdb'ing

*searches*

I'm pretty sure that was Stark Trek 2. With the bugs that go in your ear and screw your brain.

im still awake haha, been awake since 9am on the 12th, im still pretty awake, and im still working on the laptop...! im tempted to see how long i can remain awake hehe..

Mo's laptop crashed, she wasnt doing anything major...and when she tried to boot it back up it said "no boot sector" and so the fun began...

..i ran fixboot...fixmbr...and got rid of the problem...

the when you tried to boot it , it said "ntldr is missing"
so then began the copying of various files from 4 differnt windows disks trying to get it to recognise the file...no luck, so then its back over to the xp recovery disk..and it asks for the admin password to the hard drive..she couldnt think of it...neither could i, so i logged onto a password recovery site, with a cd image i had to burn...which chucks out a code, which the site translates...turns out that the password is 8 letters long, and U is the second letter...if i want the rest of the letters i either have to wait 48 hours...or pay them $15...so i waited 48 hours, only to find out, that the password is very very very very recognisable...its one of my low level passwords lol...so im like - wtfff!!..turns out the code it chucked out was for my external hard drive..48 hours wasted!..so after trying everything...all over...again. i give up, i turn to mo and give her the bad news..."babe, i cant save your stuff"

so shes upset...and i get back to the laptop..thinking "shit, i have to make this work. so much of her stuff is on there"...

so i start playing around in the command prompt in the xp recovery console...turns out that the laptop is only detecting 10mb...

...thats it...10mb...the entire drive..so im thinking, thats not right, its a 40gb hard drive - leading me to belive that the data is still there, but in a differnt partition or somthing, which it cant boot into, and the partiton its trying to boot into...has nothing on it..blank...no wonder it wouldnt boot.

so - next was to fix the ****ed up boot sectors, but how to even start with that?
a friend of mine suggested

"Windows PE" or rather "Bart PE" which was built on "Windows PE" which stands for "Windows Preinstallation Enviroment" basically its a version of windows, a mini version, that runs completely off a cd! leaving your hard disk pretty much idle so you can use other software in the form of plug ins to save your stuff!

so off i go...i burn about 8 or 9 (im not kidding) cd versions of windows pe, with differnt plug-ins on, trying to find one that will work.....you see, i found a plug in that would let me recover the files, it detected all of them...but refused to let me extract them - which also brought up problem 2...where to extract them to?!

of course the answer was my external hard drive, but even after 7 burns i had still forgotten to add the "usb support" plug in to it, so off to burning again

now it was detecting my usb external hard drive - but still not letting me rip files off the disk! so that was the next problem and last one (i hope) that im going to have

which brings us up to date, over 24 hours i have been working on this laptop, trying to save it for her, and now i have found a program that appears to be ripping the files good....

so, "WHAT THE HELL" i hear you all shout "why the hell did he bother writting all that out"

well, the answer is simple, this file extract program is freeeeeking slow, its going at 1% every 4 minutes........very slow

so im sitting here on the pc, watching it rip, and its just reached 94% so even when i stop writting this..theres still going to be at least 30mins left...

oh ...basically the hard disk crashed, and im trying to save it

*cough*

Did you fix the laptop? Did you get anything for it? ;)

Did you not think of putting the hdd in a caddy and connecting it to another pc to take the files off?

Easily the most confusing thing I've ever read.

Might as well have been written in Mandarin.
