I know what you mean with BPM counters on mixers don't work that well, this is why I record all my vinyls on to my PC and then use MixMeister BPM Analyzer to get the BPM

I don't see how knowing the BPM would help you beatmatch...

I mean...the only way would be to write the pitch you need to to get a track at 178 BPM for example...and do that for all of them.

but that would be really time consuming - anyways, once you've got the ear it only takes 5 seconds to get an approximate pitch setting (and since writing down the pitch on a record would be only an approximation anyways) so there's really no point. You couldn't be precise enough - and if you can't beatmatch how can you keep your mix locked (you likely couldn't correct your mixes too well)... plus you can't play any new records or battle anybody

basically I don't think a DJ who writes pitch settings and such is a good DJ since he clearly doesn't have the ear for beatmatching yet and probably can't hold his mixes too well as a result.

and saying you do that so you can do other things than just spend all your time beatmatching...maybe you should spend your time beatmatching so you get the ear and don't have to spend so much time doing it - takes me about 10-15 seconds to get a precise pitch setting....

the fact that you say you have trouble getting the tracks timed properly when you throw them in shows you don't know how to beatmatch yet since you almost never have them timed when you throw them in. What you do after is either nudge the record faster or increase the pitch until they're matched and put it back to the setting it was afterwards. DJs that start out don't usually see that when you're beatmatching a track either your pitch fader is always moving alot or your record is being nudged alot and your pitch fader is moving a little (but something is constantly correcting the match) and they try just putting a pitch setting (so they never hear the 'beatmaching sound")...

stop using labels and such and practice.
I somehow doubt I explained what I meant properly but you'll get the ear for it in a few weeks if you try this way - and you'll never get it by writing pitch settings unless you learn to correct the mix (which is essentially the same as beatmatching in the first place)...

my rant is over.

I can see where some people would consider it newbie-ish, but when your sets have a wide range of different bpms it heps immensely for quick reference.

it's not really a matter of beatmatching, just weather the track will be able to be used next.

if you were to be using CDJ's you could easily write down the pitch setting accruatly (and cheat) but for me i just tend to remember the aproximate pitch anyway

Thanfully, my BPM counter doenst even work right. It actually fluctuates during the song. This keeps me from 'learning by the numbers' and helps me learn by ear.

I dont think its cheating to have your mix 'pre-mapped' out. More power to em. If the music is good who'll complain?

I know it a long time to match the beats, but I'm sure I will be able to do it in a couple of secs in 2wks time lol As I'm missing most of the song just trying 2 match the net one in

arfondavis:

just keep trying...took me a few weeks to understand it - however, once I got it it progressed super fast!

just try really hard and once you "get it" you have no idea how much easier spinning will be (and how much better you'll be)

ive got a bpm counter on my mixer...never need to use it and have never felt the need to use it. plus, it only goes up to 160bpm which is pish if i need it to play hardcore, lol..

i agree with Dain-ja though. you have to learn to beatmatch properly. it will take a bit of time to get ur head around it, but, like everyone always says, practice makes perfect.

Yep agree with that I don't memorise or write down any times much quicker just to do it by ear.

I think it takes the fun out of mixing if you have already found out what bpm a choon is. Ok a rough idea is fine but the best bpm counter out there is our ears. Theres nothing like matching those choons from scratch.
