Hey, everyone!
Due to recent events in the electronic music community (quote from http://www.drugpolicy.org): [quote] Last year our supporters helped raise attention to an outrageous abuse of power in Racine, Wisconsin, where hundreds of music fans were ticketed for being in a crowded nightclub where a few people used drugs. Those ticketed had no drugs on them. The police didn’t even have any evidence that they had ever used drugs. Their only “crime” was dancing at a nightclub where other people who used drugs were arrested. Although only three drug arrests were made, police issued citations to 445 innocent attendees with a penalty of $968 each for being ----------------------------- lookame! Ima attention whore!

(continued from upper post)
quote: each for being "patrons of a disorderly house." Thanks to a public outcry from people like you, work by the Drug Policy Alliance, and an ACLU lawsuit, the citations were ultimately dismissed.
Now, it has happened again; this time in Flint, Michigan. On Saturday the local police raided a popular nightclub, Club What’s Next, and ticketed hundreds of music fans who were attending a dance night known as “Getting Lucky” (the DJs included Halluci-Nate, Sparkimus Prime, White Rabbit, Captain Cheddar and California's Dj Primo.) While some people were arrested for possessing or selling illegal drugs, most people were ticketed for “frequenting a drug establishment,” a misdemeanor offense.
That’s right. In Flint, Michigan (and many other cities) if you go out dancing on a Saturday night and the police happen to arrest other people at the club for drugs, you could be charged with a drug crime even though you had nothing to do with drugs. These innocent party-goers now face up to 90 days in jail and a $500 fine. They also face a criminal record with all the legal and social barriers that brings. Several people that were at the club that night told us club-goers were also subjected to strip searches, including full cavity searches – even though they had nothing to do with drugs. Imagine the police walking into your favorite bar or nightclub and subjecting you to a strip search for no reason! Imagine spending 90 days in jail or paying a $500 fine for dancing!
... I have decided that the hardcore community needs to take action.
What speaks more to the hearts of lawmakers than action? I am from Denver, Colorado, USA, and am orginizing an event. This event is a youth only event that will promote HIV/AIDS awareness, and safe raving (drug abstinence). I have contacted local youth groups, and the Drug Policy Alliance for advice and possible sponsorships. I am using this event as an alternative to prom nights (which are nothing more than an excuse to get drunk and laid, amoung most circles), so that people who enjoy electronica can (among 3 different rooms of hard dance, housey, and trancey) have a night where they arent plauged by pop-punk, death metal, and mainstream rap.
A night like this would show lawmakers that the youth of today are responsible enough to have the rights to keep clubbing and raving legal. To remove the stigma from Carebear backpacks and kandi and lolipops (stupid drug war and its stupid "if your kid wears kandi he will OD on ecstacy" ads). To remove the "exile" status of kids in camo and sweatshirts who listen to jungle. This is about unity, and showing the lawmakers that there can be responsible raving.
So I wrote this letter to some orginizations, this is a sample letter to the Spot youth center in the Metro-Denver area in Colorado:
quote:
Dear The Spot and Urban Peak:
My name is Connor Penhale, I'm a 15 year old student from Denver, CO, and I currently attend Denver University high school. As one of those kids glued to headphones blasting hardcore electronica, there is very little I can do to talk about music with my peers. However, when it comes to prom night, all I can think of is "Oh wow, more pop punk and drunken afterparites." As a matter of fact, I have no respect for the institution that is high school prom. Prom, amoung many circles, is considered nothing more than a time to see freinds for 20 mintues, then get drunk at afterparties and hopefully get laid. This notion gave me an interesting thought: why do people allow such an event to exist among minors, when we are cracking down on licensed clubs and events because one person sells drugs to two people?
Which begs the question, why aren't people educating our youth with more than scare tactics? I for one have never done drugs, and am actually compelled to do them just in defiance of those ridiculous commercials and the trillion dollar drug war that is endangering the rights of every American. So with all of these beliefs in my head, I thought about what I could personally do to fix this.
Realizing that the scare tactics are worthless, I decided that the only way to educate is through positive reinforcement.
Throw a party. A big party. Throw an all-nighter around the time of prom night so that every kid in Colorado who thinks prom is just as worthless as a rock concert can have a prom of their own. But more importantly get a real chance to get the at-risk kids for drug abuse and HIV/AIDS together for an educational event and an alternative to pro m night. It would serve as a great way to educate the youth of Colorado and show the people who oppose clubs and events that play electronic music that there can be responsible raving and clubbing and dancing. It will certainly draw a large group, and because Colorado youth are used to paying 30$ for prom tickets, as a prom alternative, it would be sure to draw a lot of support from the dejected kids at Colorado high schools who have no desire to go to some pop-punk rock show (vis-a-vis the average prom ANYWHERE in the United States).
The opportunities to really get through to the students would be great! From anti-drug MC's to youth action group sign-up, this event could really make some press and make a difference. If Catholic youth groups like Young Life can draw thousands of members in one state for a celibacy and sing-along party, I'm sure that the people of Colorado can band together for one night of free pamphlets, free STD testing, and some damn good music.
However, my experience is not in the area of education. This is why I am contacting your groups. I am seeking guidance in making this event happen. I have already talked to many hardcore DJ's and event organizers, and many are willing to donate their time and talent. I myself am a DJ, and an electronic music advocate, in addition to being a great online organizer.
I can see your orginizations being interested and involved in such an endeavor because of all of the great opportunity for education and fundraising. I have already contacted the Drug Policy Alliance of New Mexico, and the event people at the Protect Live Music branch of the DPA with a similar letter, hoping for a positive responce. I am rounding up interest for such an event either during prom this coming prom night week, or during the 2006 prom night week.
I can be reached via cell at 720-235-6489, via email at [email protected], via AIM at lucificifus, via MSN at [email protected], via Yahoo at lucificifus, and via Skype at lucificifus.
Please contact me as soon as possible to discuss the possibilities of such an event for either this year or next. I am in the process of finding possible venues, promoters, DJ's, etc. I am very interested to hear how this idea could be implemented, and how your organization could help! I am also especially interested in hearing from you about your initial concerns with the project, what obsticles we might face.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Connor Penhale

It's a crime to dance to music played by a DJ in Japan between the hours of 1am and 5am... Police enforce it as well.
it's all hardcore.

well, it looks like the rave act has reched all parts of the u.s. well lets see in october 2002 i went to a anti-rave act protest (ticketed and put club owners and rave promters jeopardy) and ever since that act has passed all clubs late night dances and such are 18 and up and 21 and up and..well in fact in texas hardly any parties and if there are any they are big time djs and well are at mainstream clubs...so we have alot of kids just battling and calling style sof dances stomping or strining and battles..so it has gotten rEALLY out of line in past few years. so, i mean whatever people to decide to protest like i did and we actually danced in front of the south steps of the capitol (austin, texas) and was awesome..and well it didn't do much. but we were made and ALL junglists, ravers, kandy kids(like me decked out in hundred of pieces of kandy looked really funny on steps of a government building), just club goers. it was a fabulous oppurtinity to let the whole nation see RAVERS in its all*....STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHT* PEACE FOR ALL*...go and fight the machine*

They either close at 1am or operate illegally by paying off the yakuza to pay off the police.
it's all hardcore.
