Help! I'm having a load of problems with the pianos (standard and MDA) on Fruityloops - I find that they distort too easily so I need to have the volume down fairly low, which as I'm sure you'll understand is a pain in the ass. Does anyone know what filters/settings etc. etc. I need to use to get some crisp sounding piano at a decent volume? Many thanx

Are you playing everything too high? The key to a balanced mix as I see it is to remember that less is more - with the volumes on everything turned down, you don't need to boost as high to get the results you want and therefore you won't clip as easily. Just drop the volumes on everything.

It could have been that you had some distortion fx on the master fx....

Back again - I've had a few pc problems, but I seem to be back on track now.
Right, following my last post I've knocked down the volume on all the channels etc. etc. so I'm just having fun and games working out what should be where. To an extent, this worked so thanx guys I just learned something. The piano no longer breaks up, but it doesn't sound quite right. I've tried using reverb, delay, filters, compressors etc. etc. and although it sounds alright through my headphones, it sounds pi$$ poor through my speakers.
Does anyone know how to get a decent sound of the piano? PLEASE HELP!!! I'm going mad here..
Also, I've just re-checked my settings, and I have no effects or anything running on the master channel.

it's called buy a synth =P
i gave up on trying to get decent pianos through fl. sure it's possible but it's so much easier to just run a patch and record it off a synth.
maybe your monitors aren't cutting it too...

I did wonder when someone would suggest buying a synth.... I was kind of hoping that there might be some alternatives which don't involve money at this moment in time.
Ultimately, what I'm doing is just for fun.... I have zero musical knowledge, but I do know what does sound good. All I'm using is just Fruityloops - that's it, just plain ol' vanilla FL with a few VST plugins. Can someone recommend a CHEAP setup that I can afford (i.e. less than 200GBP) that will give me decent results? All I need is a studio on a shoe-string.
Also, can you please explain what you mean by running a patch? Any help would be appreciated.

the right samples and good vsts, (rgc's z3ta is astounding for a soft synth) and flstudio becomes all you need. after a good four or five months hard graft me and my compatriot have created some thoroughly banging tunes.
fruity loops and the knowledge of how to use it is all you need. im about a third into the program with so much more left to discover, and i feel my tunes beat some of the releases ive heard on rebirth and uprising not to mention many other labels.
we dont have scott b's production skills, or the songwriting skills of sy or breeze an styles, but i reckon our stuffs just as avvin' it as anythin else.
you wanna get better a t it. spend time with someone who knows it, or nows something about general music production, get good vst's (by fair means or foul) and LISTEN TO HARDCORE.
dont stick it on and jump about to it. listen to itr. hear the structure, the note placings, all the random shit that goes on the background to give the tracks life and personality. dont be put off by the whole (youll never make good choons with soft studios because they are wrong.
as far as im concerned hardcore shouldnt be clean and highly polished. the ravers sure arent so why should the choons. but theres a fine line between slight distortion that blends the sounds together and fuzz.
the biggest challenges ive found have been A: good songwriting (because good melodies dont come naturally theyre hard work. B:EQing. the bass drum has to be stupidly loud. compress it to heck. whack it up. but dont let it distort.|
EQing sucks, get someone who knows what theyre doing to give it a going over, its the difference between a choon with potential and a choooon
i make chooooooons
