right, been listenin to some old skool hardcore, stuff like Love Nation, Demo, Demo's old stuff, all the real choppin breakbeats, sorta like jungle beats, ya know what i mean? anyways how do ya make them? i can get the snare and kick, but all the rides and hats, and other snares or claves(rimshots possibly?) i cant get right, doesnt produce the sound i want. Anyone have any .flp files of jungle/hardcore beats they could send me, tell me if there are any certain drum synths i should use, etc?

cheers

Moving to Gear Talk.

I think making breakbeats (like jungle type) are really complicated. You really have to have a good ear to hear what percussion is being used. I wish I knew how to as well.

OK, heres how I work....

Start off with 1 or 2 (or 3 or 4 etc.... however many you want) drum loops of any genre. Timestretch them so they are all the same tempo, or stick them through recycle.

Then, start making edits to them. Get between 5 and 10 different edits of the same break by swapping drum hits around, reversing hits, adding effects, just whatever takes your fancy really. You should end up with between 10 and 20 edits of your various breaks.

Stick them into your sampler, each break mapped to a different key (i usually map to the white keys only for ease).

then open up your sequencer, start it recording and start jamming with all the edits in your sampler..... layer them on top of each other and whatever. Once you have recorded a good length then go through and tidy it up if it needs it (your timing may have been slightly out when playing live).

This next bit isn't necessary, but I like to do it occaisionally. Bounce it all down to a single audio file and then start chopping up your new break into loops that can act as new breaks, and simply repeat the above process with the breaks you have just recorded. You end up with some fantastic jungle style breaks.

Here ends the lesson

Matthew aka DJ Underloop

I've been trying to make sorta jungle breakbeats, but the most successful I've been is by taking each little sound (kick, hats, snare) cutting them up and pasting them back in a different order.
Also, Breakbeats sound cool with a mild reverb over them.

Back in the old days, it was hard. But nowadays its really easy.

Just for effect run in through some wacky compression then a bit of distortion. There you have it.

Oh and crazzy chopping too. Make sure you mess with the pitch.

I should upload a demo... Yeah I"ll do that. CommandoBot.com -> Downloads -> Music Stuff -> Recyle Jungle Demo

In both ogg and mp3 format :)

This is the Amen Break choped up and distorted :) Nothing too complex. If you want others I'm more than happy to help.

Oh, yeah if your fruity-ing, just grab a break beat (like the Amen) and use the beatslicer. Thats it :) (Beatslicer is a rip of Recycle/Dr Rex from Propellerheads)

Acid is probably the best for messing with breaks like that, just cos you see the waveform in front of you. But the beatslicer can give you the same sound like my demo.
