So I have recently broken into the realms of digital mixing, I have a controller but what I don't have that would be really really really (really) useful is a nerdy list or website of happy hardcore record labels (or the tracks that are on them) that are now, or have been availablelylyly digitally or on DJ Friendly CD.

That would be really useful as happy hardcore has a finite amount of vinyl releases it would be a handy and achievable resource.

Has anyone attempted something like this or is there anything online like this (other than discogs, which of course is wildly hit and miss when it comes to mp3 re-releases from the 90s, and not really dedicated in the manner this would be/or have the same functionality)

I've just been trying to get my vinyl collection > digitally. I've been really sucessful with the trance, the hard house, the hard trance, the house...but wow the happy hardcore is one leaky bucket of missing digital tracks.
Can't find anything from NEW ERA...and good god what the hell did they do to the re-mastering of those DJ friendly tracks on AATW's HTID 1??? Hahaha. Essential Platinum is now owned by Pheonix Music International?? Like all of it and the 90s stuff? https://www.phoenixmusicinternational.com/essential-platinum
so where's all that, eh??

Also thinking about functionality it could have notes for any tracks stating any differences between the vinyl and digital

"available digitally on this CD, but 20 seconds shorter as breakdown removed"
"available digitally from beatport but mastering is terrbile"
"available digitally but sourced from vinyl and remastered"
"radio edit available digitally from this cd"
"given away as a freebie on soundcloud: here"
"previously available on beats24/7 store"
"192kbps mp3 best available"

that sort of thing.

a community wiki might work?

yea, the closest to a form of oldskool restoration work has been done by HU with JAL and Vinylgroover

perhaps there isn't much call for this sort of list.

Well, while I don't have a list, when it comes to having the most re-released stuff, I think Scott Brown's Evolution labels trumps most when it comes vinyl or DAT to digital.

If only DJ Fade could get Beats 24/7 up and running again (I'm pretty sure it was him who had it, since a bunch of the stuff I remember seeing there popped up on Festerheadz, another place that sold older stuff digitally which I asked Fade if it was him who set it up and he said yes), that would have the largest collection of older happy hardcore as digital released (well most of it. The only stuff I have from Beats 24/7 that wasn't CD quality were a bunch of DJ Demo/Vital Element stuff)

When it comes other labels, I'd say we have, or rather had, JAL's backcat on HU. And we have Kevin Energy's huge overhaul with the NEC labels that he had the most ownership in. And Al Storm, although most of his older stuff doesnt appear to have been stored in high quality so a bunch of the Retro bundles are riddled with MP3 converts

Outside off Scott Brown's efforts, Vinylgroover, Brisk and Al Storm are the artists that have most of their stuff out digitally, although Brisk's stuff has been mostly spread out on various compilations.

I would love this. I just haven't been in the scene long enough to contribute.

This is one of my biggest gripes with the hardcore scene - music availability is just absolutely terrible and it's really disheartening to try and find tracks from all these older comps / mixes, only to find that it was either vinyl only, never got a release, or was on some website 10+ yrs ago and no longer exists.

I think the best way forward with it would be to create a public wiki that everyone can edit and get in on as my knowledge is fairly good with CDs from the 90s and have a little info on some tracks from talking to some producers, but I'm not very good with what was released digitally on mp3 from 2003 - now

so I'll get a fandom up and running, get a skeleton working which will probably be

Main page: A list of labels ??click label?? A list of releases on that label
if they have hyperlinks on the track name it means they have a digital release, or information on that release
ie:
a link to the discogs page for that CD it is on
a link to the purchase page for a digital download
a link to the soundcloud page for a free download
information as to when it was available if no longer
extra info about the digital version (comparision to vinyl/quality of mastering/available versions etc)
extra info as to why it isn't available

if the track doesn't have a hyperlink then the person can assume it is not/has not been available for release, or if they know better they can add their knowledge.

I think it's probably best to cover the years 1994 - 2006 being the main years that happy hardcore was 'alive' and being pressed to vinyl. Before that I think things would get messy as jungle and 'original' (slow) hardcore can go do their own ;) and after that period everything was basically being released digitally, anyway and vinyl was taking a nosedive.

I don't have a lot of time on my hands these days but I'll try and make a good start on it.

*edit*
perhaps getting a bit ambitious here, but I just thought that perhaps a separate page on the wiki could list Mix CDs, where people could add mix cds with links to information about each track unmixed digitally.
that would give me a place to add my Bonkers ones I've already done!

Same could also go for old DJ Sets if people were so inclined.

It's a gripe to be sure...but having had a crack at trying to get all my UK garage vinyl in digital format too, that scene is in a far farrr worse position!
First they didn't get even quarter of the DJ friendly/unmixed cd compilations that happy hardcore got in the 90s as they were late to the game..and then because the uk garage scene was so huge and commercial when they all got signed to big labels the big labels concentrated on getting just the radio edits out there on the CD singles alongside butchered original versions. Then of course because they're big labels they keep the rights and just sit on the tracks. We're quite lucky in comparison.

But sadly that is still relative...we're still unlucky ;)

Always ;)

I think easiest would be to scrape Beatport, Junodownload and Toolbox, as I'd say these have the largest collection of digitally sold backcats thats still on the market. And then add what HU sells as bundles.

After that, we'll have to let other users help us add links to artist's bandcamp (I think Storm and Seduction have most of their backcat there)

I could try to do the former and parse it into something simple as CSV and gather as much of the data as possible (label, catnr, year, track artist, track title, album title, track number, etc...)

Just a little bit :p

I know when I was trying to find tracks I wanted, it was definitely a bit of a chore to try and track down what was available and what was not. Over the last few years, I know that some labels have become available digitally [TNC and Maximum Impact off the top of my head - last i looked it seems like beatport is posting older Essential Platinum 02 tracks as well), so having a single resource to see if something is available would definitely be helpful for someone trying to find tracks they like.

I would really like to get a single view of where to get stuff digitally from, so would really appreciate something like what?s being described.

Also is the JAL bundle available anywhere now or was it limited time and will it ever come back again?!

it was limited for a month, but came back for a week or two during a sale. Never been digitally available since. And I think the stuff on jal's own store is still just mp3's
